This scholarship is for African American women 35 and older who are nontraditional students seeking postsecondary education without the support of a spouse. Applicants' education may have been interrupted by family responsibilities or other personal demands, or they may be entering college for the first time because of these factors. They must also demonstrate a mastery of written communication skills in an essay. Membership in NHBW is not required, but it is desired that scholarship recipients will join the organization after graduating from college and obtaining full-time employment.
