You are, too? Believe it or not, being from the Golden State has more benefits than beautiful landscapes and beaches. Just by being from California, you qualify for a number of California scholarships that can help pay for your college education.
In a world where the scariest part about going to college can sometimes be paying for it, it’s great to know that help is available available for students who ask. In fact you can get scholarships just by being from California. As a resident of the Golden State, you have access to a lot of California scholarships and grants offered by California-based organizations. Here at Cappex, we’ve done all the searching for you. Some California scholarships have vocational requirements; they’re meant for people with certain majors or career interests. If you're planning on a career in medicine, your GPA is 3.6 or higher and you scored 1850 or above on the SAT (28 and up on the ACT), you qualify to apply for the $10,000 Milken Scholarship. The John D. Isaacs Scholarship is a California scholarship designed for students with a demonstrated interest in marine science who will also attend college in California. If you’re majoring in Engineering, consider The CELSOC Scholarship. This California scholarship offers awards ranging from $1,000 to $7,500 for students enrolled in an ABET-approved General Engineering or Surveying program.
There are also scholarships offered by certain organizations to their members. For example, if you’re a member of the Japanese-American Citizens League (JACL), you can apply for their Nisaburo Aibara Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000-$5,000 California scholarship to help you pay your way through your masters or doctoral degree. The California chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star offers an Order of the Eastern Star in California Scholarship, with awards ranging from $500 to $3,000.
You can also earn scholarships for your nonacademic talents. If you’re a musician, consider applying for The YMF Scholarship, which is a California scholarship offered to musicians under 18 who are juniors in high school or younger, and vocalists under the age of 26. The application requires an audition, and awards range from $500 to $1,000. Similarly, if you are a writer, you can the Matters of Life and Death Writing Contest for a chance to win anywhere from $250-$1,000.
Your ethnicity or religious affiliation can also help you earn California scholarships. The Malki Museum Scholarship is offered to students who are members of a Southern California Native American Indian reservation. The Jewish Family and Children’s Services Educational Loans and Grants (Scholarships) include awards ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 for Jewish students who are residents of certain counties in California. There’s also the $2,000 Korean-American Scholarship for students with GPAs of at least 3.0 who demonstrate financial need.
