Categories Comments Campus Safety I have found DCAD to be a very safe campus.
Greek Life DCAD has been approached by an art school-specific (non gender-specific) fraternity, and with enough interest would gladly join!
Clubs and Activities Yoga Club Writing Club Animation Club Film Club and MORE!
Great for these types of students Introverts, Extroverts, Creative minds, Motivated artists!
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus Every year we have a Halloween parade with prizes for the best individual and group contestants.
Bang for the buck DCAD is one of the most economical art schools on the East coast!
What to do for fun Downtown Wilmington is a fascinating urban area, and one that is particularly supportive of the arts. Down the street from DCAD is the Grand Opera House and the World Cafe Live at the Queen. On the first Friday of every month, galleries and studio spaces downtown open their doors to the public and display local artistic talent and often provide refreshments!
Food and Dining Food is provided by a company called Culinart. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. They offer a salad bar, deli with made to order sandwiches and wraps, and a hot line for entrees. Breakfast is the best meal of the day!
Dorm Life Our dorms are much larger than average! This allows a good deal of space to complete larger projects as well as space to lounge and relax. There are also common lounge areas which include recreational activities such as pool and air hockey.
Academic Rigor DCAD is extremely rigorous. Most first-year students find themselves surprised by their workload. The most important thing is to allow for enough time to create something you can be proud to show your professor.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared for a lot of work! Art school is not easy, and time management is crucial for success. Also, take great pride in your work, you will be using it to transfer to your next school.
In three sentences The Delaware College of Art and Design has been a great experience for me. A small two-year school provides you with an intimate experience where you work closely with teachers who are truly invested in your education. After leaving with an associate's degree, students are fully equipped to pursue their bachelor's in fine arts at many other schools, namely their affiliate school in Brooklyn, the Pratt Institute.

Categories Comments In three sentences DCAD is a wonderful school with a great, welcoming atmosphere. The student body is rather small, so there is a more personal student-teacher relationship situation throughout the school. Critiques can be rather honest, so it is competitive and students know exactly how they rank with what they bring to the table so they become more motivated.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students Though it isn't as expensive as other art schools, it is still a bit out of reach in terms of my price range so I will be going to Middlesex County College to get some basic art credits and I hope to attend this art school afterward. I've seen and heard some great things about this school! :)

Categories Comments Bang for the buck cheaper alternative to start your education at DCAD then transfer to a 4 year university.
What to do for fun Not much to do in the city but the mall is ten mins away buy car,a park is right next to the school, small business up and down market street.
Food and Dining After I graduated the purchased a new meal plan system so I don't know how it works.
Dorm Life Depends on the people but overall the dorm life is chill everyone gets along, hangs out in the student center. The school provides parties, activities every week with a DJ karaoke for students
Academic Rigor Use flash cards, draw image cards, study in groups The course load is hefty but it will get getter once you transfer, at average you will take between 4-5 classes and one day off a week.
Tips for prospective students Learn to work well with others Learn your surroundings, Wilmington DE is the heart of Delaware and has a lot to offer for art students. Keep valuables close its a small school thats in a city so iPads,iPods etc are easily stolen. learn to parallel park.
In three sentences The least expensive two year college with great a strong academic faculty that will help you while attending the school.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Although Wilmington has improved over the years as far as downtown safety, campus safety can worry me sometimes. We do not have guards at any of the dorms besides the occasional RA sitting at the desk in the 707. Recently, over Christmas break there was a break in over the course of three days in the Saville. Assistant director of Student services caught the robber in his room with a TV and a lap top. Cops then patrolled the building to eventually find the guy who was hiding out in there. Safety precautions are now being taken, and thank goodness students were not in school at the time. But safety is one thing that need to be improved.
Greek Life DCAD offers no fraternities or sororities.
Clubs and Activities We love movies at DCAD! There is always an awesome movie being shown by the Film club. The Animation club also plays everyone's favorite cartoons. The writing club features slam poetry nights. And there are also many artists lectures that are always fun to experience.
Great for these types of students Great for students who like personal interaction with teachers and small classes. It is great for smart, motivated individuals and is the very last thing from a party school
What to do for fun There isn't much to do in Wilmington. There are a few museums close by, two malls, and a bowling ally you can catch a bus to. The most fun thing I do in Wilmington is travel. It's 3.50 one way to get to Philadelphia and less than 40 to travel to New York.
Food and Dining Food is provided by Culinart, the same food service Pratt offers. It is open three times a day on weekdays and twice on weekends. There are many options including a deli, easy pick food, and vegan entrees. The food is both healthy and usually pretty tasty. It offers a lot of variety and they are constantly using new recipes.
Dorm Life There are two dorm buildings: The Saville and 707 King St. The Saville offers apartment style dorms complete with kitchens, laundry rooms, and garbage service. The 707 is the newest addition to DCAD and is more of a hotel style with no kitchens, but they are all brand new. They feature marble tops in the bathrooms, a lounge area, and the brand new dining hall is located downstairs where you can watch a movie on the flat screen while enjoying your meal.
Academic Rigor Even though DCAD doesn't offer six hour long studio classes like a lot of other major art schools, you will not find yourself bored or in need of something to do here. If you are putting adequate amount of time into you stay very busy. Course loads usually are 5-6 classes worth 3 credits each a semester. The Art History and World Lit classes are wonderful and informative, but include weekly readings that can sometimes be up to 90 pages. In most studio classes besides 3D Design there is a project and/or homework to be completed weekly. Time management is key.
Tips for prospective students Since it is very small and personal, I wouldn't suggest it for students who are looking for large student activities, clubs, or fraternities/ sororities. I would suggest going to this school first if you're financial situation holds you back from going to a big art school all four years. Since it is partnered with Pratt, their foundation year is very similar anyway.
In three sentences It is a great and affordable price, well worth what you pay. Wilmington isn't the most interesting city, but it IS located in the middle of a lot of the United States greatest cities as far as art goes, making it very easy to visit museums and see the masters in person. The small size makes for very personal relationships with the administration, teachers, and students.

Categories Comments Campus Safety Although the crime rate of Wilmington, Delaware is through the roof, the school's campus seems to remain mostly unaffected by it. This is thanks to the the unit of police dedicated to patrolling the campus's surrounding area, as well as the school's excellent private security. The school's guards are sufficiently intimidating, and the dorm rooms have a state-of-the-art digital security system.
Greek Life Greek is one of the many prevelant cultures in Wilmington, Delaware. There is an annual Greek Festival in Wilmington where people can experience that culture's wonderful food and music. Many Greek vendors come to sell Greek trinckets and pastries.
Clubs and Activities DCAD has a slew of clubs for a variety of interests, including: film, poetry, yoga, animation, writing, and more. Clubs and activities are all student led and are very easy to create and publicize in the school. I myself and the president of the school's animation club, and the faculty is more than happy to provide the club with support.
Great for these types of students The Delaware Collage of Art and Design is a great school for students who have a passion for creating art, and growing intellectually. It is a fantastic art education experience, whether a student is shy or loves the social spot light. Every form of art, and artist, is valued at this school.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus DCAD has a handful of exentric annual celebrations and competitions. One of which is the yearly egg drop, where students compete in pairs to see who can build a contraption that would ensure the safety of an egg while being dropped from a great hieght (the roof of the six stories tall DCAD building). Events like the annual egg drop brings the student body closer together and is a wonderful way to celebrate the school's collective creativity.
Bang for the buck Attending the Delaware College of Art and Design is a great way for student's to cut the cost of their art education by nearly half. The school was founded to help young artists who might not be able to afford an entire four years at art schools of a higher pedigree. A student can obtain a transferrable Associate's of Fine Arts degree, for the cost of only a year of art education at a school like the Pratt Institute.
What to do for fun Unfortunately most of downtown Wilmington, Delaware is either extremely dangerous or extremely dull. However, there are some excelent live music venues near the school, such as the Queen and the Wilmington Grand. There are also acceptional restaurants close to the school, like the Chelsea Tavern and DiMeo's Pizza.
Food and Dining The food service at DCAD is hard to critique at the moment, as the school is only just beginning it's food plan this coming fall. However, the word of mouth on this upcoming food service is very positive, and is apparently the same service used by Pratt Institute. Currently, each student is responsible for their own meals, whether that be cooking in their apartment's kitchen or eating out.
Dorm Life DCAD's dorm life is exciting, with events that are student created like pancake parties and video game nights. The students in the DCAD dorms also support each other whenever someone is in need, whether that student needs a cup of sugar or a shoulder to cry on.
Academic Rigor DCAD has a staff and faculty that are dedicated to helping students learn and create, as well as a curriculum that demands a massive work load (in and out of class). Professors drive students to push past their artistic comfort zones in studio classes. The curriclum demands intense work loads with most courses assigning six to ten hours of homework weekly, and all studio classes last four hours.
Tips for prospective students There are three things every prospective student should know to excell and be safe while attending DCAD. Never stray from Market St., befriend the faculty as soon as possible, and make sure to use Wilmington's Downtown Visions service if danger is suspected.
In three sentences The Delaware College of Art and Design is a fantastic mid-level art school that nurtures and challenges it's students. Students of every level of artistic skill can grow not just technically, but intillectually as well. The school itself is growing with a campus that sees charming renovations and expansions almost yearly.

Categories Comments Campus Safety DCAD is located in a safe part of Wilmington although the surrounding area isn't the best. There is a security guard at the lobby who can call other people who will walk you to the bus stop or your dorm.
Greek Life No Greek life.
Clubs and Activities There are a total of about 5 clubs, not a while variety.
Great for these types of students A great place for artists who do well in a small-city environment.
Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus There are many smokers who usually hang out by the side of the dorm building. It's called the stoop.
Bang for the buck For a private art school it is amazingly cheap. Although it provides a negligible number of scholarships for students, 20k an year isn't bad.
What to do for fun Wilmington doesn't have much for college students to do but the surrounding big cities Philadelphia (30 mins away), New York (3 hours away), and Washington D.C. (2 hours away) have many places for students to go.
Food and Dining While I was attending DCAD, there were no meal plans or cafeterias. Students had to feed themselves. DCAD is planning on implementing a new meal system starting the Fall of 2012.
Dorm Life Apartment style living spaces which are a bit out of date but feature full kitchens, bathrooms, large windows, and washer and dryer.
Academic Rigor Not the toughest school, but it has decent academics.
Tips for prospective students Take as much as you can from this school and plan to continue your education elsewhere, PRATT would be the easiest choice.
In three sentences A small and closely knit community of students. Teachers are dedicated and passionate and have a close relationship with students. Unfortunately, not many opportunities are present as it is a small and rather unknown school, but it's a good school to enter if you want to get into PRATT.

Categories Comments Campus Safety People patrol around the school but its still a dangerous area
Greek Life no Greek life
Great for these types of students Very artsy.
What to do for fun There really is not anything to do around Wilmington.
Food and Dining Food is to bought at a grocery store or take out. They recently started a meal plan.
Dorm Life You live in actual apartments. With a living room, bedrooms, bathrooms, and a kitchen in the second year apartments. I am unsure as to what the living situation is like for first years because the school recently bought a new building. The second year apartments are kinda messed up with old appliances and un uneven ceilings.
Tips for prospective students Be prepared! Art school is a work load especially as a full time student. Make sure you know where your money is going. I really love the professors but the office workers and financial department are messed up.
In three sentences The teachers are exceptional and want you to learn. I feel you get your moneys worth when it comes to learning. They aren't organized in the office area and I feel like they have hidden fees.

What to do for fun Not much to do, DCAD is in Wilmington and it is a business area. You could take the bus and go to the nearby mall.
Food and Dining There is just now a food plan. Student who live there are required to buy it.
Tips for prospective students Stick with going to DCAD. IT opens many doors to go to other schools.
In three sentences DCAD has an environment different from other schools. The teachers are enthusiastic about what they teach and the student that they are mentoring. The course load is heavy, but it is worth it.

Dorm Life the dorm rooms have two floors which is not bad and they also have washers and dryers so you don't have to go do your laundry anywhere else
In three sentences i have went to visit the campus and i gotta say it is great you can buy your supplies from the school so you don't have to worry about going online and searching for anything. and the teacher i met are really cool they are willing to take outer their time and help you.not many college teachers are willing to go outer their way to do that.

Categories Comments Campus Safety We have security guards at the school and security people who walk around the area to keep things safe.
Greek Life Studying is very important!
Clubs and Activities They have film club, poetry slam, cartoon club and much more.
Bang for the buck compared to other big art schools, the price of DCAD is much better and worth it!
What to do for fun well Wilmington De is not as exciting as Newark but i guess that can be looked past. We do have some great karaoke nights, casino night and other really fun things well all get together and do!
Food and Dining as of know we buy our own food, but i hear next year there will be a food plan for students.
Dorm Life dorm life was adequate!..well actually pretty cool because the school has full apartments for students and just bought out another building on market st.
Academic Rigor i think for a small school what you learn is amazing here. the classes are small and and everybody knows everybody so there is always people to study with! the teachers know their stuff.
Tips for prospective students you may have heard its not that hard to get accepted..and if that's true or not, the classes are not as easy as i thought but are all pretty cool! so just go into it prepared and have an open mind!
In three sentences Over all i love the school. The people who work there are great! i also love that it is a small school and everyone is really friendly.

Tips for prospective students -Keep your grades up in high school! (yes, even math) -Portfolios matter. Don't stop creating and always bring your best work to your review. -*Photo students*: You're going to hate this but... you need to have drawings in your portfolio. It would be a good idea to take a drawing class offered at your high school.
Bang for the buck Students are receiving a PRATT education for about a third of the cost. It is high level learning and the studio classes are top-notch. Definitely worth every penny
Am enjoying being here I love the school and the housing is great (they have student apartments. My only complaint is that there is not much for students to do in the city of Wilmington.
Am learning a lot I find it fantastic that photography students begin courses relevant to their major within their first year. The foundation seminar is also a great way to get a taste of each major offered at DCAD. The teachers are very knowledgeable and are truly passionate about what they do.

Categories Comments Great for these types of students creatives, illustrators, designers, animators, photographers, and people who love everything about the arts.
Tips for prospective students Work hard! The more you work the more you learn. Fall behind and you stay behind. School is stressful enough, dont make it harder than it already is.
Bang for the buck School is expensive no matter where you go, but The great staff, supportive professors, friendships gained, and the new found art knowledge made it all worth it.
Did enjoy being here Being that it is a small school, it allows students, faculty, and staff to become one giant family. Even though you are on your own for the most part, everyone looks out for one another and the staff is always available and understanding. Wilmington is also an interesting place in itself. Every first weekend of the month, there is art loop on the market street block. There is plenty of art, free food, and entertainment during these days. In addition, living in an apartment style dormitory was a thousand times better than the jail cell-like dorms at most universities.
Did learn a lot The learning experience is like no other. Not only can you create beautiful works of art, but you also gain an enormous amount of information about the adobe creative suite programs, blogging and networking. You don't just learn about light, shade, and color to better yourself as an artist, but you gain the knowledge to sell yourself so that you can get a head-start in the art world.

Tips for prospective students be prepared for a lot of homework. live on campus too! its a valuble experience to live away from your parents! p.s. dont whine about the foundation classes! you learn a lot in them! they are actually important!
Bang for the buck it is so much cheaper than going to a four year school, it may only be a two year school but if you graduate you leave with an associates degree!
Did enjoy being here the teachers were great... there aint much to to in wilmington after 6pm because it is a business city, but some of the people you'll meet make it worth it.
Did learn a lot Yes i learned a ton! its a great 2 year starter school to get your associates degree at!.... all the teachers are required to have experience in the majors they are teaching..
