What are College Freshmen Scholarships?

College scholarships aren’t just for high school seniors. They’re not just for upperclassmen, either. In fact, there are a wide range of scholarships available to college’s youngest ranks: college freshmen. As you might have guessed, they’re called college freshmen scholarships, and they’re a great way to help younger college students successfully transition into the next year. On this page, learn more about the different types of college freshmen scholarships, what you need to apply, and how you can find the perfect options for your needs right here on Cappex.

How Do I Qualify for College Freshmen Scholarships?

Are you currently a freshman in college? If your answer is yes, then you may qualify for some of the many college freshman scholarships offered nationwide each year. (If you’re an incoming freshman, pay attention. These scholarships will be available to you soon, and some already are.)

College freshman scholarships are financial awards with varying amounts and varying criteria. Most of the time, these scholarships are created to cover all or some of the costs of one year of college (often sophomore year, but sometimes freshman year). Other scholarships have larger stipends intended to cover several semesters or school years.

Financial awards aside, college freshman scholarships also differ in their requirements. Some require students to submit an essay, maintain a certain GPA, complete a project, or obtain letters of recommendation from faculty. Some college freshman scholarships are only available to certain majors, while others stipulate that an awardee must complete a certain course, pursue a certain area of study, or undertake an extracurricular endeavour to earn the scholarship. Before applying, it’s important to read and understand all requirements.

Why Are College Freshmen Scholarships Important?

Freshman year: sometimes fun, sometimes stress-filled. One thing almost every freshman student can agree on is the cost of college: it would be better if it was lower. That’s where freshman college scholarships come in. They help current freshman and incoming freshmen pay for the next year (or more) of college. For many students struggling to pay for school (or just looking for a little more breathing room) they’re a big blessing. Helping freshmen start their college careers off on the right foot also helps colleges, as their students with less financial stress are often happier, more outgoing, and more productive.
