    Campus Safety

The campus is really safe for the most part. You will always see a officer on campus and especially at night.

    Greek Life

We do have greek life and we also are currently adding more. Her is the link to see all of the different sororities and fraternities: https://www2.jwu.edu/content.aspx?id=49392126007

    Clubs and Activities

There are tons of fun and interesting clubs on campus. To many to count but I will link them down below. I love going to the club in am apart of and we really have fun and come up will very creative events. Here is the link: https://www2.jwu.edu/content.aspx?id=11118

Great for these types of students

There is always these going on in Charlotte for may different types of people and students. There is always festivals, parties, CIA and many other activities.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

You have take a pic with the Wildcat Statue.

    Bang for the buck

You can go to the local movie theater and if you show them you student ID you only have to pay $8. Most of the restaurants uptown are reasonably priced and good places to eat. The school is on the pricey side but I think its worth OT for my degree especially since this is the only school that offers Sports/ Entertainment/ Events Management as a degree.

    What to do for fun

You can go to the mall, to a party, or explore the Uptown Charlotte. You could even attend a baseball or football game which is all in walking distance from the campus. You could participate in events on campus and maybe even join a club or two. There is a lot to do and many ways to have fun. You just have to be willing to go find it.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria food gets nasty and repetitive after a couple of weeks of attending the school. Eventhough JWU is known for culinary, the staff and students aren't able to share there food or cook gourmet meals for the non- culinary students in our cafeteria. Instead we have to rely on foodservice company to make and serve the food and its mostly nasty.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life was pretty cool. Everything is in walking distance from the campus. Its literally across the street and the fitness center is behind the dorms. The people are pretty nice there. You can make new friends. The dorm are nice in the inside and there is always something to do. The building are very secure. You have key access with your student ID card to get into all buildings and its important that you keep it. You need it to get in the buildings and into your room.

    Academic Rigor

JWU has very good academic program. They literally teach the necessary knowledge from experience. All of my professor currently worked in the field they treached and give you hands on experience that you can carry with you throughout the rest of your career. Most of the teachers prepare you to succeed as long as you put in the work. I am a Sports/ Entertainment/Events major and we go on a lot of field trips and hands on learning.

    Tips for prospective students

A tip I wild give a prospective student is to join clubs on campus and get involved because you can meet a ton of different types of people who are like minded just like you. You never know who you will meet or couple give you that major opportunity. I also would say find people in your major that you believe you could learn and grow from. Someone who can have your back in class when you don't understand something. Also get to know your teachers and faculty because they are a great resource and reference for life. My last tip would be have fun and really take in the college experience because it definitely is a interesting experience.

    In three sentences

I would give Johnson and Wales a 4 out of 5. The teacher there really care and I believe the have a great academic program. You come out of there knowing and experiencing more than you even thought you would know and ready to pursue the next chapter of your life.

    Campus Safety

Ehh pretty safe campus but could be better. I wouldn't walk anywhere alone a night

    Greek Life

There are 2 Fraternities and 1 Sorority which were just added this year in 2014

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of clubs for students to join and there are always more clubs being added.

Great for these types of students

If you're interested in culinary then this is a great school for you

    Bang for the buck

As a culinary school I think you get your money's worth but if you're going for business I would go to a cheaper school.

    Food and Dining

They give you plenty of meal swipes but for being a big culinary school you would think they have better food

    Dorm Life

What i like most about the dorms is that they are suit style which means there's a common area with a toilet to one side a shower to the other and a sink with drawer and then there are two separate bedrooms which two people share so you only have to share a shower with 3 other people instead of a whole floor

    Academic Rigor

The professors actually have a career in the field that they're teaching so they can give you a lot of insight as what it's really like to work in that specific field.

    Tips for prospective students

Don'y be shy open up and talk to people also keep an open mind and try something new.

    In three sentences

Johnson and wales is a very close nit school where the teachers will know you by name and you will more then likely know or have at least seen most of the people that go to the school if you live on campus.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is very good. Since we are right by Uptown, there have been cases of robberies off campus, but they ensure you are notified. You must scan your student ID for entry into every building on campus, to use the elevators in the academic building, and to get into the dorms. During class hours, you must wear a name tag to ensure only students are inside classes. If caught outside after dark, there is a free 24/7 escort service in which security walks you to where you need to be.

    Greek Life

2014 will be the first year of greek life for JWU-CLT. I believe there are two sororities and three fraternities!

    Clubs and Activities

There is a club for almost everything! https://jwucharlotte.collegiatelink.net/Organizations

Great for these types of students

JWU is very diverse with people of different race, gender, orientation, religion, etc. JWU also has people of varying personality types.

    What to do for fun

There is always something to do at JWU and in Charlotte. They show movies in the Wildcat Den and lecture hall, during finals they have a stress relief fair, there is a gym and exercise room, etc! Uptown Charlotte is just a few minutes walk from the dorms, and is full of clubs, restaurants, a movie theater, bowling alley, and so much more.

    Food and Dining

There is one dining hall at JWU, set up buffet style. While you have many options and the food is good, it was not what I was expecting from a school known for it's culinary program. However, they are very willing to work with the students and have a comments box which they read and reply to almost daily. You are able to purchase reusable plastic containers you can fill with food and take back to your room, as well as eco-friendly JWU cups! One thing thing to know: they do not accept cash. Charlotte is a beautiful city with innumerable amazing restaurants for all price ranges. http://www.dineoncampus.com/jwcharlotte/

    Dorm Life

The dorms at JWU Charlotte are very secure. A key-card is needed to enter the building, enter the stairwell/elevator area, and enter your room. Set up as a suite, you share a dorm room with three other people, rooming with one of them. It has a separate shower room and bathroom, making sharing much easier. *Tip: If living in Cedar Hall South, try to get a room on the corner (meaning -36 or -38) as this puts you right next to the trash room and laundry room!

    Academic Rigor

I am a Baking and Pastry student. The academic classes of my freshman year were not as difficult as I was expecting them to be. In the lab however, constant attention is necessary to be successful. Additionally, because the lab segments are only nine days, perfect attendance is a near necessity. The chefs are more than willing to work with you personally both in and out of class, which can be helpful on difficult subjects or material you may have missed.

    Tips for prospective students

Go there ready to be yourself and learn all you need for your career!

    In three sentences

Johnson and Wales is a school designed for entrance to the industry. Every professor and chef takes a genuine interest in you and works with you to help your achieve goals. Although on the expensive side, the school works with you to ensure success in your future career.

Its always a top priority. There is security at every corner around the campus and cameras are everywhere. You also need an ID badge to get into the buildings and use the elevators.

    Greek Life

    Its coming soon.

    Clubs and Activities

Plenty of them on the involvement network.

Great for these types of students

All students are welcome, just be dedicated to your craft.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There are too many to name. There's somethong new to do everyweek.

    What to do for fun

We are VERY close to uptown, so theres always something to do whether it be hookah lounges, shopping, art galleries, of sight-seeing. The trolley sytem, that is free, is only a block away from the dorms.

    Tips for prospective students

Bring and open mind and always be willing to try new things.

    In three sentences

JWU is an amazing school dedicated to you becoming the best professional you can be. The Culinary Arts Program is awesome and all the chefs are commited to you peforming at your very best. Theres a place for everyone here.

    Campus Safety

There are some sketchy places at night but overall the city has really nice security walking around all the time because of all the banks and the security is really nice on campus as well and always around if you need help.

    Greek Life

There is a Frat they have parties. But they are all douches and prey on freshman...watchout

    Clubs and Activities

There are always game nights in the student activity center.

Great for these types of students

    Friendly, fun, love the sun!

    Narnia! (You'll figure it out)

    Bang for the buck

It's expensive but all colleges are.

    What to do for fun

The city is so close going Uptown is always an option! College night is Thursday and it's cool this school doesn't have classes on Friday! Check out Bar Charlotte, Phoenix, the music factory. Or if you have a day explore the cool artsy sections of the city like NoDa and Central.

    Food and Dining

Not the best college cafeteria I have been to, but they are improving...

    Dorm Life

The RAs are usually pretty chill and aren't too strict about anything. South Hall is definitely better than North Hall. On the 4th Floor of south there is a industrial kitchen which is cool for everyone to cook in.

    Academic Rigor

    The academics are very easy.

    Tips for prospective students

It's a beautiful city to live in. Very clean and the people are nice.

    In three sentences

    In three sentences

Johnson & Wales is an amazing school the faculty is out standing. Even though the school and faculty are great the cafe is okay, they make it out to be this great food and it really sucks. The dorms are okay as long as you get along with your room and suite mates.

    Campus Safety

Johnson and Wales University has top notch safety and security. Our campus security offers 24/7 assistance and escorts across campus. Another great thing about campus safety and security is that they diligently patrol campus and are also constantly putting out news updates and safety tips to help students remain as safe as possible.

    Greek Life

Johnson and Wales has four different campuses to choose from and each campus is a little different. The Denver Colorado campus, North Miami Florida campus, and the Rhode Island campus all have Greek life. The Charlotte campus does not yet have Greek life but is expected to join the other campuses in this department by Fall of 2014.

    Clubs and Activities

Johnson and Wales takes a lot of pride in offering its students many different ways to become involved in clubs and activities. The Johnson and Wales Charlotte campus alone offers over fifty different student clubs and organizations. Another fantastic thing about Johnson and Wales clubs and organizations is that they are easy to start and they are almost all student led.

Great for these types of students

Johnson and Wales of Charlotte is a great fit for students looking for more than just your average college experience. Passionate and involved students will thrive here. Students who are looking for a party school should look elsewhere.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There aren't really any unusual traditions or locations at the Johnson and Wales Charlotte campus. Because Johnson and Wales is located in downtown Charlotte many students like to spend time exploring the city. Another place many students like to spend time is in the residential quad (a large outdoor grassy area) located right outside the underclassman dorms.

    Bang for the buck

Before deciding to attend Johnson and Wales University, students should know that it is a private institution with hefty fees. Although Johnson and Wales provides an excellent education it does take quite a bit of a financial commitment to attend. On a positive note Johnson and Wales has an excellent reputation for offering students easily obtainable financial aid.

    What to do for fun

Johnson and Wales Charlotte is one of the most exciting and fun campuses around! For starters, Johnson and Wales Charlotte really prides itself on providing lots of on campus activities such as: talent shows, hired performers, campus pep rallies, barbecues, sports, field trips, movie nights, and much more for its students. On top of the many activities to do on campus, Johnson and Wales' close proximity to downtown Charlotte offers students many opportunities to enjoy what the city life has to offer.

    Food and Dining

Ironically enough for a school that prides itself on being a leader in the culinary education field the cafeteria food is just that, standard cafeteria food. Some of the nice things about Johnson and Wales' cafeteria are: it is buffet style, there are lots of healthy options, and the menu is fairly diverse. Another positive outlook is that culinary majors rarely have to eat in the cafeteria because they are eating everything they make in class.

    Dorm Life

The best advice I can give anyone about dorm life is to go to the Johnson and Wales website and take the online roommate compatibility quiz. Something that a lot of students struggle with is going from having a room to themselves to sharing a fairly small space with another person. The Johnson and Wales online roommate compatibility quiz is short and simple, takes away the intimidation of rooming with a stranger, and provides students with the opportunity to make a lifelong friend.

    Academic Rigor

Johnson and Wales University is as academically challenging as you make it. If you stay focused, attend classes, do what's instructed, and turn in all of your work then passing classes is a breeze. If you refuse to put in the time and work you will not succeed at Johnson and Wales University.

    Tips for prospective students

As a current student at Johnson and Wales University, some of the best advice I can give to prospective students is to be ready to work hard. Attendance is another one of the most crucial factors at Johnson and Wales because in some classes if you miss more than two days, then you will be dropped from that course. Last but not least, the most beneficial thing you can do at Johnson and Wales is to build a positive reputation for yourself through networking in order to open up more possibilities for your future.

    In three sentences

Johnson and Wales University is is one of the most prestigious culinary schools in America. Students who are looking for a great education and a great college experience will feel right at home here at the Johnson and Wales Charlotte campus. Come to Johnson and Wales with a heart full of passion, a positive attitude, an inquisitive mind, and unending strive to do well.

    Campus Safety

They respond right away to calls and emails, and are available in their office if you even don't feel safe (walking back from class late at night for example).

    Greek Life

JWU Charlotte doesn't have affiliated Greek Life yet, but it's a continually discussed topic among students and staff for the near future.

    Clubs and Activities

There's always something to do like club meetings and club events, and they are always well advertised.

Great for these types of students

Anyone who strives to be the best they can.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The Charlotte Panthers football team's practice field is located right behind the student center, you can literally watch them practice from the end of the CHS dorm building windows.

    Bang for the buck

JWU may seem expensive but you aren't just taking you any basic college courses, you're taking classes that are teaching you skills in your specialized field of study to help your in your career path in the future.

    What to do for fun

There's always something to do in Charlotte, whether it's a JWU event hosted by one of the many clubs that JWU has, or just wandering up Trade St to walk around Uptown Charlotte like the Epicenter or the Time Warner Cable Arena.

    Food and Dining

The dining hall has so many different options it's sometimes hard to choose. Our dining hall has a salad bar, a the grill bar, an on the spot bar, an around the world bar, a balanced U bar, a gluten free bar, a brick oven bar, soup options, as well as everyday options like cereal or waffles.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are great. Because JWU Charlotte is the newest campus, the dorm rooms are all suite style, so every two rooms (of two people) shares a bathroom, shower room, and sink/vanity area. There's always something to do in the dorms, whether it's hanging out with your RA watching a movie in the common room, dorm vs. dorm kickball in the quad, or competing by floor in the Olympiad games, you'll never be bored.

    Academic Rigor

Because the majors are so specialized, the teachers know that the students are there for a reason, and they hold you to a higher standard which the students are more than willing to follow.

    Tips for prospective students

    Apply early

    In three sentences

Johnson and Wales in Charlotte is the perfect mix of college and business. With the professional dress code, and the very specific majors, you really feel as if you are working towards your future rather than just taking college courses. And being located just a few blocks from Uptown, Charlotte, there are always fun things to do including events and even work opportunities.

Campus safety here is top notch. We all are protected by four different locking doors by the time you get to your dorm room, and all visitors must be checked in and out. There is also 24/7 cops available to walk you to and from anywhere if it is needed.

    What to do for fun

Downtown Charlotte has amazing night life and we are only a few blocks away. There a lots of clubs and bars to go to and so many delicious restaurants!

    Food and Dining

    The food here is incredible.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are nice and spacious. They are also well renovated, and kept very clean.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are difficult, but not too challenging. The lab classes are much more difficult.

    Tips for prospective students

I would definitely get involved in your field as soon as possible. I worked at a bakery for two years before attending JWU, and it was very helpful for preparing me for the rigorous baking program here.

    In three sentences

I would definitely rate Johnson and Wales 9 out of 10. Like any college it has it's ups and downs, but the education you receive here is beyond comparison. The small campus and tight knit community makes it the perfect school.

Being right uptown there is a lot of different restaurants, day activities, and night activities to do.

    Food and Dining

In the freshman dorm the cafeteria is provided and also newly renovated.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great. Even though JWU Charlotte only has three dorm rooms they house a lot of people. Most importantly JWU does dorms by suits so you only are going to share a dorm with 3-4 people and you will all share 1 bathroom.

    Academic Rigor

As in every school there are professors that you want and do not want. Most of the professors at JWU are awesome in every way.

    Tips for prospective students

If you would like to come to JWU then I suggest you apply for early decision and complete a fafsa right away. JWU in not inexpensive by any means. It is a private school and its tuition exceeds $40,000 per year. Really think your decision out and know what you want to do. Get involved with many different clubs. Food and Dining

The meals provided in and part of room and board comes at what you pay for. Being a past freshman here, I was in with everyone else complaining the food should have been better but the school is part of a lunch program and thats what we get. $5 a meal is what you are kinda paying for, its not like you will get fine dining food here. There is always a variety but there are those days when there seems not appetizing.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are nice. You share your freshman year with 3 other students living in a suite. There will be issues and problems but always talk to each other. Communication comes in very handy.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here are pretty easy here as always you will have projects, papers, and homework but you can manage. Labs on the other hand are very in-depth and you have to learn fast.

    Tips for prospective students

Know how to iron! You should always be at top notch in your best attire whether it be in your chef whites or your professional clothing.

    In three sentences

    Tips for prospective students

Choose wisely, and make sure you have the money to go here.

    Campus Safety

This school takes safety very seriously. You are required to scan your id to get into buildings and to use the elevator. If you ever feel unsafe walking you can call them and they will walk you to where you need to go.

    Greek Life

Unfortunately, there is no established Greek life. There is an unofficial Greek fraternity but the school does not recognize it at this time.

    Clubs and Activities

There are a lot of different clubs and activities around campus. The clubs are very active and if the club you like isn't available, you and four other friends can create it! If you are into sports there is a basketball team and a cheer leading team!

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students that are very professional and doesn't mind wearing business attire everyday for class. For the culinary students you will need to be very organized and able to take constructive criticism.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I can not think of any unusual traditions or locations but there is a Starbucks right across the street that almost everyone stops by before or after class for a pick me up!

    Bang for the buck

This school is very expensive but I think you definitely get what you pay for. Most of the professors are Doctors and are great teachers. They offer many different free activities to get you engaged in learning such as going to a museum down town or going to a play.

    What to do for fun

The campus has a lot of student activities during the week and weekend so there is almost always something fun to do. It is a short walk to downtown Charlotte when you feel like getting off campus.

    Food and Dining

The cafeteria is large with many different types of food. Every Monday is meatless Monday which is great for vegetarians. The food is average for a college campus but there is always a salad bar with many fresh vegetables.

    Dorm Life

I am currently a commuter student because I live within the radius, so I have never lived in the dorms. To live in the dorms is very expensive but they are very nicely kept, and are actually spacious. Most dorms are suite style so there are 2 people per room but 4 per suite.

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging but not impossible to get good grades. Studying is a requirement but your life won't have to be devoted to the books.

    Tips for prospective students

The draw back to such a great school is that it is expensive! So try your best to find as many scholarships as possible. If you want to enroll in the baking and pastry program it is necessary to enroll almost a year in advance to make sure that you are accepted.

    In three sentences

Johnson & Wales is a wonderful school that can make anyone enter the work place. They give you all of the skills you will need to not only be good, but to be the best. If your goal is to get a wonderful job after college this is the place for you.

    Campus Safety

Safety and security is very strong. They will do escorts to places on campus but not places off campus.

    Greek Life

There is a fraternity that is not associated with the school but other than that this campus does not offer greek life and says that they don't want to be associated with it.

    Clubs and Activities

Baking & Pastry Club, Cheerleading, Basketball, Volleyball, Coffeehouse,

Great for these types of students

Students who aren't looking for the big college experience. Students who like small schools.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Going to the Panthers games are great perks. The school sells discount nose-bleed seats. If you don't have tickets to the game, walking around uptown on game day is always fun to watch all of the fans.

    Bang for the buck

I feel the school is very over priced for what they offer.

    What to do for fun

During the day Charlotte has a lot of things to do, mostly restaurants and the occasional planned city activity. There is a bowling alley uptown and a movie theater as well. But if you plan on going out after 9 don't expect to go there because they don't let you in if you're under 21. The few clubs are the night time thing to do. The school doesn't offer a lot of large activities.

    Food and Dining

There is only one dining hall, you use your card to gain access and you can go 15 times a week. There are take - out options available. The food surprisingly isn't that great considering it is a culinary school. Some students work there but it is mostly outside hired help.

    Dorm Life

Freshman year the dorms are suits, two rooms with two people to a room. Four people sharing one bathroom, shower, and vanity area. Each room has its own thermostat also.

    Academic Rigor

I was not an honors student in high school and I find the classes here to be fairly easy. Sometimes based off the professor they like different things done different ways so sometimes the work may be confusing.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you are really into this major before coming here. When I came I thought 100% that I wanted to be a pastry chef but the attitudes of the people and the chefs changed my mind.

    In three sentences

JWU Charlotte is a small campus and some of the activities have a high school feel to them. The dorms and classrooms are great because they are much newer than at other colleges.Surprisingly, the food in the cafeteria isn't great.

I've never had a problem or felt like I wasn't safe here at school. They are always on duty so you can call if something is wrong at any point in the day. Always friendly and they're quite helpful.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of clubs and they are almost always doing some event, even on the weekdays!

Great for these types of students

Whoever is interested in Culinary or Baking and Pastry and really has a passion for it should come here to learn all you can about it!

    Bang for the buck

Though it is quite expensive, this school will definitely help you find the best job and get you far in life. No doubt you'll be glad you came here.

    What to do for fun

Definitely get involved in some of the clubs and organizations here. It doesn't interfere that much with school, you make friends quickly, and you get to help out with events. There is also a lovely park down the road that has a soccer field, tennis court, and basketball goal. Downtown there is a great little cluster of food places with a bowling alley called the Epicenter that's fun to go hang out with friends on weekends.

    Food and Dining

Not the best I'd have to say, which is surprising since this is mainly a culinary school. Though they have made improvements throughout the year, I still feel as though I just cannot eat there some nights.

    Dorm Life

Not always get with wifi and you are sharing a room, though I found I haven't need too much room to myself. I do like that you share a bathroom/shower room with only three other people, rather than the traditional college communal shower.

    Tips for prospective students

Always read over what you are going to do for the next day of class if you can. Procrastinating is always bad, so try not to. What always helped me was setting up an hour or two to go to the library and just concentrate on my studies without any distractions. It really got me through the year and I was able to focus more in a quiet environment.

    In three sentences

The academics in this school are quite superb. I find that having smaller classes are better because you really get to know your teachers. You learn so many knew techniques and tricks while in labs, which makes the experience of being there all the more enjoyable.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is okay, each dorm has a separate shower. When your a sophomore you will live in the campus apartments called City View Towers which is located in Uptown Charlotte.

    Academic Rigor

The school may be easy to get into, but it hard to stay in. Please always attend class because the classes are designed by each time your in class.

    Tips for prospective students

I would live on campus for the first year. I would have all your financial needs completed by the first day or you can't start your classes. If you live in the dorms and have roommate issues; go to your Residential Advisor for help.

    In three sentences

This school is has been nothing but an eye opening experience. When I applied I didn't know what I would be getting into. When I arrived to the school, I was amazed by how passionate the teachers are about their students learning.

    Campus Safety

Campus security is great at JWU. They have security to walk you back from the academic center, library, or other places around campus when you feel unsafe or it is dark. Johnson & Wales is very concerned for their students safety.

    Greek Life

Johnson & Wales does not have Greek life. The campus does not want the reputation that Greek life holds. The campus is discussing the possibility of starting Greek life though.

    Clubs and Activities

Unusual traditions? Well there are not many unusual traditions but they do have a ton of interesting things to do on campus. These events include the Michael Jackson dance-off, magic nights, and the powder puff football events.

    Bang for the buck

JWU is a very expensive school. This is because JWU is known for its name, so you pay for the reputation. But do not go to JWU for just an associates degree or that is a waste of money unless you are a culinary arts major.

    What to do for fun

Charlotte has a ton of things to do. In uptown there are night clubs, restaurants, site seeing, museums, and shopping. About 10 minutes away from uptown there are shopping malls and movie theaters.

    Food and Dining

Since JWU-Charlotte is in uptown Charlotte, there are a ton of restaurants to eat at in the city. The dining hall by the dorms has a ton of choices and generally has great hours. The only critique is the asian dinners are gross.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great! JWU has lots of activities on campus for students to get into. There are a ton of clothes and the dorms are spacious.

    Academic Rigor

The general classes are simple and easy to get good grades on but your major classes tend to be more difficult. Most of the teachers do not deal with laziness so do not slack off. Also, most classes give lots and lots of notes.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure to study hard since most classes midterms and finals are 50% or more of your grade. Take full advantage of all networking opportunities. Lastly, be sure to join clubs since they look wonderful on resumes.

    In three sentences

Johnson & Wales is a great school with professors that have extensive knowledge of their field. The opportunities at Johnson & Wales are endless. Lastly, Johnson & Wales gives you the chance to network with big faces in your industry of study,

    Clubs and Activities

There are plenty of clubs and activities for students to be involved in. Even if students feel that there is no club here that fits them they can create their own. That is the best part about it you can express yourself in your own way.

    Bang for the buck

Overall Johnson and Wales has to be one of the greatest universities. It is one of the universities that contain a handful of successful people. I would highly encourage anyone who is interested in this school to come here.

    What to do for fun

What to do for fun? Well my friends and I go the club, we have movie nights in each others room, and we love to walk uptown, and enjoy the view. Even though I am a Charlotte native I still get excited going uptown, and seeing everything.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining is pretty good. You have a limit of 15 meals a week. Since we are practically a culinary school there is always something new to try in our cafeteria.

    Dorm Life

    Campus Safety

The security staff is very friendly, and I've never run into any problems, nor have I ever felt unsafe on campus.

    Greek Life

None at the moment, but they're trying to start it up.

    Clubs and Activities

I can't honestly rate this, since I haven't joined any clubs. There aren't many of them, from what I've seen.

Great for these types of students

If you learn well in a small class and don't mind dressing professionally, you'll do well. You have to be career-focused and assertive, and not be too proud to ask questions. If you don't make friends, you're going to have a crap time.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Honestly? Aside from the Academic Building and the Gateway Center, it's smaller than your typical high school, so unusual locations are almost nonexistent.

    Bang for the buck

It's quality information that they pass on to you, as overwhelming as it may be at times. The professors I've had are funny and accessible, and they know what they're talking about. The tuition is high, so it's really up to your performance as a student whether or not you're getting your money's worth.

    What to do for fun

Student Life jumps through a lot of hoops trying to organize things for students to do, but the movie nights are the only ones I bother to attend. Besides sports events, clubs and hanging out with friends are really the only things you can do on campus. Unless you like to read or stay in your dorm, there really isn't much else to do except make your own fun. Downtown Charlotte was made for older people, not college students.

    Food and Dining

They won't always serve what you like, and the choices aren't always healthy; ultimately, it's up to you to decide if you're going to eat in the cafe or go out. Dinner usually has the best food, breakfast usually has the worst. To make the most out of your day, though, wake up as early as you can, before your classes, and eat before the rush.

    Dorm Life

I'm not a social person, and I really don't like living around other people. Choose your roommates carefully, preferably ones that aren't loud and don't keep you from going to sleep on time. If you're really lucky, you'll have at least one term in a room by yourself, but those chances are low.

    Academic Rigor

Depending on how you did in high school, your expectations will be different. If you've been on honor roll often, academics are fairly easy. The classes are a bit long, so make sure that you remember what your teachers tell you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you don't make friends, your off time is going to be a drag; Charlotte isn't made for college students, it's made for people with cars and money. If you're coming for culinary labs, be prepared to stay up late and wake up early. Ask questions, educate yourself, and above all, learn to retain what's being said.

    In three sentences

The academic classes are small, similar to high school courses. As long as stay on the ball, it'll be an easy term. Your career classes are a different story...

    Campus Safety

I do work study under Campus Safety and Security and I know first hand how much work it takes to keep my school safe and I will swear by the students that will attend this school that these people are here to keep us safe. The cameras, the scanners, the parolees, every single one of them is doing their part to keep us all alive to go home and see our families and all we have to do is not do stupid things like walk into the city at night alone or let in strange people to our buildings

Great for these types of students

This is a place for everyone. The jock, the bookworm, the outgoing, the shy. There is a little bit of everyone here with a little of everything for everyone here especially since there are people from all over the world who attend classes here.

    Bang for the buck

For the money, you get the teaching. Students in labs learn how to cook, bake, read and write recipes, sweep, mop, and squeegee a room in under 10 minutes, and build skills and relationships that can last lifetimes during the day. Sometimes you might not see where the money goes, but after a few days in those classes and you feel the new knowledge pushing at the lobes of your brain and then years later when the diploma is resting in your hands then years after that when it's hanging up in your own store's wall, you'll know where that money went.

    What to do for fun

Being on the edge of Uptown leaves so much to do. Taking a stroll about the campus or into the city is good enough for me, but there are plenty of great places to eat in the city, places to party on the weekends (which start on Thursdays here), and a beautiful building that glows different colors until 1 am every night that is perched at perfect angles from many dorm windows.

    Food and Dining

Very hit and miss. The food can sometimes be amazing and you'll binge upon it until you can feast no more and other days you'll look at the food and stride right back out and hit the Chinese store down the block. I had expected more from a culinary school and if you are a vegetarian or vegan you might want to invest in finding meals completely outside of the dinning hall because even the salad bar is often wilted and unappeling.

    Dorm Life

They are dorms. They are not spectacular and they are not section 8 housing. They have the wear and tear of usage and stupid students, but compared to most colleges, these dorms are nice; however, this cannot be said for the students who decided that 3 am is the time to practice their operas or take a jog about the halls. Pack some kind of white noise machine or headphones for your I-Pod and you should be fine

    Academic Rigor

This is not a college meant to murder you over its academic courses, but it does demand that students attend class and preform like young adults who want to go into the work place. If you want to skate through the courses, go ahead and try. Some teachers will let you, others wont, but the only one who will suffer is you because you are paying to not show up to class.

    Tips for prospective students

Baking students, be prepared to do some serious math. This field is like algebra class on steroids and it will break some people, but every erased equation will lead to a solved one and every solved equation equates out to a better final product. To all students, learn what is considered personal dress before you get here because it will be needed for you to even enter most buildings on this campus.

    In three sentences

A school focused on teaching students what it means to work in their field of choice. As a baking and pastry student with not even a full term under my belt, I can say without a doubt that being a baker or pastry chef is no wheres near as easy or star stunning as it seems on TV, but the rewards are so much greater.

    What to do for fun

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina so fun is not a hard thing to find at all. My favorite part of the city is the Epicenter which is located, as the name suggests, right in the middle of the city. The Epicenter offers a wide array of restaurants and bars, also included at the Epicenter is a top of line luxury movie theatre and a bowling alley. Quite fun!

    Food and Dining

As you would expect at a school offering Culinary Arts as one of the degrees our cafeteria is above average. The selection at times became repetitive and the hours were strange and inconvenient some days, but besides that I had no complaints.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are like any other out there that you will find. Dorm life is not fun, but it is a necessary part of the college experience. I have no complaints of the dorms at our campus at all.

    Academic Rigor

I felt myself very challenged in all of my classes and I appreciated that very much. I want to be challenged every day that I walk into the kitchen and I found that every class at Johnson and Wales University.

    Tips for prospective students

Charlotte can be a very intimidating city with a lot of distractions, you have to resist them to an extent. Everyone loves to have fun but school is our main focus. My biggest tip to incoming students is to attend class every day and never miss class if at all possible. Being there is half the battle.

    In three sentences

When I first came to Johnson and Wales I had no idea what to expect at all, after a month or two there I became acclimated to the university and from there things were a lot easier. My fellow classmates and the teachers are easy going and easy to get a long with, I guess it is part of the southern charm. As far as my classes went everyone took everything serious from teachers to students and it made Johnson and Wales a great learning environment. What was most impressive to me is that the teachers and the students both pushed me to learn and become the best student I can be.

    Campus Safety

Be careful. There are some issues with safety. There was a small riot during a party on campus with another university's students, and nobody was even informed. And there was even a fight between security and a student.

    Bang for the buck

I had a Presidential Scholarship and a 0 efc, but for 2 years I would end up with about 13,000$ in loans and some payments, and I had to fight a bit for that. If you really want to be a chef though, I'd say it's worth it.

    What to do for fun

I wouldn't say there's actually a lot to do. They have some decent events, but most of Charlotte is for business.

    Food and Dining

I didn't have a meal plan, but I never heard a single good thing about the dining hall. It's apparently ran by another catering company or something. But you do get to eat a lot of great food on class breaks that are made by your class or others.

    Dorm Life

I didn't live in dorms, but they seemed decent.

    Academic Rigor

The academic portions have some good teachers that should probably be at better universities for other majors, but JWU has no labs for science, some bad teachers, and a kind of weak curriculum.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are a culinary or baking school, there is probably no school that is better than this one, but be ready to fight financial aid and be willing to work hard.

    In three sentences

The school is pretty good for Culinary. The chefs are very knowledgeable, and there are some exceptional academic teachers. However, there are issues with departments like financial aid, etc.

    Campus Safety

Security is always walking around and their office is very conveniently located in the dorms. There are also a bunch of security cameras around campus, making me feel very secure.

    Greek Life

Currently we don't have girls Greek Life, but they are working on it for the upcoming years I believe.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many clubs around school and there are always new ones starting.

Great for these types of students

Anyone with a skill and a passion for cooking or baking!

    Bang for the buck

The culinary and baking and pastry programs were definitely worth going to johnson and wales for just because of the equipment that we have to use and learn on and because of the skill of the chefs.

    What to do for fun

Charlotte is such a beautiful city and there is always something fun to do. It was nice living within walking distance to uptown because I was never bored. There are also a bunch of school events that go on throughout the week completely for free.

    Food and Dining

The food in our cafeteria was sub-par, especially for being a school where the majority of people were in the culinary arts program. The hours were also kind of inconvenient and I feel like I didn't get the full college life experience because of it.

    Dorm Life

Living in the dorms my first year was definitely helpful to getting a grip on living away from home and making new friends. Overall I had a great experience living in the dorms.

    Academic Rigor

Many of the classes can be difficult but by remembering your ultimate goal it is easy to stay on track. Since I am in the baking and pastry program, I take baking and pastry labs. When I am not taking labs, I am taking business classes. It is really hard to stay focused on my business classes because I love my labs so much. I just need to remember that all of the classes have the same goal, which is food service management.

    Tips for prospective students

A tip that I would give to a prospective student would be to find out what they want to do, then follow their dreams in getting there. I would tell them to make sure that they make a plan for success and to work really hard to stick to that plan. There are so many people at Johnson & Wales that are there and willing to help guide students onto their career path, so just make sure to remember your goal in everything you do.

    In three sentences

I would give Johnson & Wales Charlotte a 9 out of 10 in career path classes. The labs are very high tech and accommodating for the class size and they are equipped with all tools necessary for success. All of the teachers are also very well trained and highly accredited, making learning from them a true privilege.

    Campus Safety

Campus is in the heart of Charlotte, right next to buildings operated by Bank of America employees, and protected by BoA security, as well as our own Campus Safety & Security. Charlotte's a nice peaceful city with a low crime rate, no need to fear here!

    Greek Life

Sadly, there is no greek life on campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Multitudes of clubs and activities. There's almost a club for EVERYTHING. Looking for community service to not only better yourself, your resume, and someone else in need? There's hadnfuls of clubs for that. Looking for a sports club or table tennis club? There's a club for both!

Great for these types of students

JWU is great for the foodie and culinary geared student, as it's really the only degree they offer besides Baking & Pastry and Event Management. Sure there are the bachelors degree programs which go into management, but it's all relly for the Culinary, B&P, and Event Management studies.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

I think every year the school does this HUGE backyard bar-b-que with pulled pork, hotdogs, steaks, porkchops, hamburgers, and chicken. It's a massive array of food that you can choose from to fill your evening craving for backyard barbeque. Finger lickin' good!

    Bang for the buck

At JWU, the chefs really get to know you on a more personal level, so you really get a closer look on your education when you get a first hand account as to what you are supposed to learn. Classes are always course specific, i.e., if you are taking meat cutting, you only cover skills that relate to how different portions of an animal are handled and cut. It's really a great experience.

    What to do for fun

Campus activities is always holding some sort of happening or event. There are movie nights, kickball in the Quad, laser tag, inflatable day, tye dying shirts, stress relief days, bingo, and all other sorts of things! And if you have a night life, Charlotte is home to a number of dance clubs that you can go to as well!

    Food and Dining

Charlotte is home to multitudes of great restaurants, bars, pubs, and eateries. Honestly, if you can think of it, there's more than likely a restaurant or food truck of sorts out there to fulfil your needs! And if dining out just doesn't fit the budget, Campus Dining is literally right next door to the dorms with plenty of different options from their daily changing buffet!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is GREAT! You get to split a suite with 3 other people, as well as get to know each one personally during your stay. There's always PLENTY of activities going on outside or on campus somewhere!

    Academic Rigor

    Tips for prospective students

the best tip is to read, practice, and learn as much as you can while you are in school (and in general). secondly, practice your knife cuts and plate presentations and if you're a baking & pastry major, also practice your piping skills, cake decorating skills, and know about bread dough and pastry dough. the ability to have good time management skills are essentials. your personal appearance is as important as your food presenation,so invest in an iron and shoe polish. prospective students should have a good attitiude and don't attend jwu, because it makes your parents happy; attend because you love to culinary arts !

If you plan to attend JWU check their major catalog and see if it has what your majoring in. This school does focus on culinary arts mainly so if that's not your major I don't advise you to attend here. Do your research on this school before applying you want your parents & your self to get the best for the money.

    Bang for the buck

I don't believe I'm getting my money worth but that's because I'm not a culinary arts student. I am a fashion major, and not to many people know the fashion in Charlotte. Each year the tuition goes up and personally I'm not getting my money's worth.

    Am enjoying being here

I enjoy being at JWU, but I hate that nobody knows the business side to JWU. The students here are friendly you grow accustomed to many different cultures. Just living on campus is nice and the dorms are well maintained unlike other colleges.

Great for these types of students

Johnson & Wales University is a very good school to go to if you want to live on a campus with a good amount of students but not too many. The education you receive will be well worth the tuition you are paying. Although there are other majors besides culinary, I do not know much about them. But if you are passionate about Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts, then JWU is the school for you.

    Tips for prospective students

If you are going to JWU for Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts, I hope you are going because cooking/baking is your passion. The chefs here are very passionate about there job and helping us chefs-in-training to succeed. If you do not care, they wont either. Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts are not as simple of a major as they may seem. It takes a lot of hard work. Not just hands-on in the lab, but also studying and reading. A wise chef that teaches at JWU told me that Reading is Fundamental. You will find this very true. Do whatever reading is assigned to you and you will go very far.

    Bang for the buck

I think for my education, the money is well worth it. But as for residential life and receiving help on campus for what you need, it sucks. The food in the cafeteria is owned by Chartwells. You'd think that at a culinary school the food would be above average, but that is not the case. The food is rather mediocre with limited choices and hardly any variety. Except for when the parents come to visit, the food is mysteriously delicious. The financial department also sucks when it comes to helping you out. They always claim that they are busy 24/7 and do not have time. They also seem like they do not want to help you, horrible customer service considering we are paying $36,000+ to pay for there salary.

    Am enjoying being here

Charlotte is a very beautiful city. It is also a very buisness forward city. Many students in the culinary program at Johnson & Wales University can get their foot in the door here and can grow as a chef-in-training. I feel that besides business, the area that JWU is located in is very dull. There is not much to do except go eat at expensive restaurants if you can afford them.

    Am learning a lot

The Baking & Pastry Arts program is awesome. The chefs are very knowledge in Baking & Pastry Arts and also in life lessons. They teach us not only applied baking skills, but also about the reward of baking and the passion you put into your profession. You can feel that the chefs are just as passionate as you are hopefully when going to school here at JWU - Charlotte. I couldnt ask for better chefs.

This university is pricey, but if you work on attaining scholarships, and grants, its affordable. The teachers provide a lot more personal experience for our career classes that make up for the amount of tuition.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you have a personal saving, your gonna need it. Understand that if you are not a culinary student, you dont get the same praise as the do. and understand that the books are expensive (thats where the savings come in) .

    Bang for the buck

I'm not sure what this means, but if it is talking about the cost of the college, i must be honest, if you are looking for the complete college experience, JWU is not the place you want to waste your money on. This school is VERY expensive, and is not really worth the money. But on the brighter side, if you are just wanting an higher education, and want to star your career then Johnson and Wales is where you should be , especially culinary students.

    Am enjoying being here

I do like the the campus in the city, because i love the city. I must admit tho, there is not a lot to do on campus. You really have to be 21 and up to enjoy the downtown nightlife. But other than that, as long as you know how to make friends, and make your own fun... your like it.

    Am learning a lot

I am a Fashion Merchandising Major, and believe it or not, i am learning alot here at the charlotte campus. They are preparing me for my future, and the real world. Though i have trouble communicating with my professors because they are well over busy. If you were to be having a hard time in a class, there are advisers, tutors and counselors that you can talk to.

Hands-on learners, those interested in culinary arts or baking and pastry arts, those with a strong work ethic.

    Tips for prospective students

Those interested in a culinary or baking major, do the career-explorations program! It's an incredible weekend program where you get to work hands on in one of our kitchens. You'll know after this program whether or not it's the right school for you.

    Bang for the buck

Our state of the art kitchens, chefs, and professors make it worth the money. We are a career-oriented school, and you certainly get the hands-on experience that you need to find a job in our tough economy. The class sizes are small, so you get to know your teacher and have a better learning experience. Plus, the university uses some of the tuition and room & board money to put on fun events for the students. It's definitely worth the money. Employers know that someone with a degree from Johnson & Wales is a person to trust, and someone that has great work ethic.

Although I am missing my hometown and my family, Johnson & Wales University is a family of its own. All of the classes are small, which allows for stronger teacher-student relationships. Also, there are always so many campus activities that even if you're not a person who wants to go out every weekend there is still something for you to do.

    Am learning a lot

I grew up in a small town with zero fine dining restaurants. One of my biggest worries was that I wouldn't fit in with other students here or that the chef instructors would expect me to know a lot already. I've had no experience in the industry, only in my kitchen. Thankfully, I was wrong about what to expect. The chef instructors are some of the most helpful people you'll ever meet, and you learn so many different things from each of them because they each have had their own individual experience in the industry. They expect you to work hard and do your best, but not to be perfect. And that's one reason why you learn so much at JWU.

    Driven students.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not get frustrated and be open to everything. Every instructor does something different.

    Bang for the buck

The tuition is pretty pricey and honestly I a struggling to pay for it, but the money is worth it. You learn a lot in the short amount of days you are in there.

    Am enjoying being here

The instructors are great. Chef Gronert and Chef P are some of the best instructors on campus, just saying ;)

    Am learning a lot

The lab classes are great. You learn alot in the the nine days that you are in there.

    Tips for prospective students

Look for scholarships everywhere because as a new adult to the world, any college you choose to go to you might have to take a loan. As young as we are we don't want loans at such a young age. Also join business clubs at your school because you will get a taste of what this college is about there.

    Bang for the buck

JWU is not cheap but everything that you pay is for something and there are no hidden fees or ridiculous fees that you would see in other universities. You also have a choice of taking up to 21 credits per term, there are 3 terms in the year.

    Am enjoying being here

The city of Charlotte is great, it fits every type of personality ther is out there. Whether you are a party person, a sight-seeing person, or a business person, there's a place for you. You get a taste of living in the city without having the noise from a city which is good if you prefer to have a quiet environment.

    Am learning a lot

This school has a lot of Professors who have been published authors, important chefs, and people in the business industry who know what they are teaching you. Many teachers here will only teach you what you need to succeed, because in the end you are paying them for only that and not useless things you don't need to know or will never use.

This school is great for people who want to get right into the industry after college.

    Tips for prospective students

Join clubs such as ice chippers, the baking and pastry club or student government. If sports are more your style their are all kinds of sport clubs that were just recently created. All of the clubs are relatively cheap and that's what you are looking for on a college budget. Another thing that you can do if you are in the college of culinary is volunteer for Chef's Choice! They are classes for people that are in the community. It is really good for the Baking and Pastry and Culinary students. You can gain eperience in your own field or you can experiment with the opposite program. There are many things you can learn like sushi rolling and how to make breads. You don't have to pay for them! They are on the weekends so you don't have to worry about them conflicting with your class schedule.

Truthfully, I love the Charlotte campus. The dorms are great and the city is amazing. There is a lot to do as long as you don't want to stay out late. The campus is in the business district of Charlotte and everything shuts down at night. But, if you can't find something to do around town, espescially on College St, there is always the Quad filled with people and the common rooms. If that's not enough, there are so many clubs and activities that you can join.

    Am learning a lot

The chefs an professors at school are amazing. Everyday that I step into the classroom I learn things. All of the chefs that I have encountered have done everything that they could to help me learn. They will stay late or come early if you ask them to. My suggestion is if you are having problems with something don't be afraid to ask for help. The chefs and professors will do everything in their power to help you. Remember if you are going to school here you are paying big $$$$$, it's not worth it if you don't ask questions.

A passion for culinary, management, accounting, well...business is the key. The school always looks for professionalism

    Tips for prospective students

Our teachers say they only spend the best for our education, and you don't have to look to agree. Even though our particular campus is only four years old, we already have a Quantity of professional chefs. Need a tip on how to spend your school year? BE ACTIVE-join activities, get involved in culinary opportunities and join, join, join! I promise you'll meet a friend every time you walk out your door.

If you would like to go to a school that is career focused then Johnson & Wales is the school for you. It has a backwards curriculum in which you learn what is in your major the first two years instead of your last two years. This gets one ready faster for the workforce than at other traditional colleges and univerisitys.

    Tips for prospective students

Johnson & Wales is a good school. If you go for culinary arts I believe it is the best school to go to, but then again i am probably biased. You learn alot. You are in the class room for six hour getting hands on experience and you are learning from professionals who came from the field. Instructors know what they are talking about. Just be prepared for the long hours (if you consider six hours four days a week long) and the work that comes with it. Also there is a dress policy. Culinary students must wear their culinary uniforms and everyone else must wear professional wear. So if you plan on going here get your wardrobe ready because there are no jean in the building.

    Am enjoying being here

There is plenty to do both on campus and around the city. It is located in the uptown Charlotte area

Charlotte the city is something in itself. The career opportunities here are amazing. But, being on campus is also a lot of fun. We have so many different clubs to join like Toastmasters International, Ice Chippers, we also have different sports clubs like Hockey and soccer. The school itself tries to keep the students entertained as much as possible. We have different speakers come to our school for our career as well as entertainment.

I never knew what a julienne knife cut was, or which oil is the best to saute with until I came here to Johnson & Wales University. I have learned so much and I only completed my first year there. The instructors and unbelievable. They work with you and never get frustrated with the amount of questions asked or how long it something as simple has making mashed potatoes is taking you. They are there for the students and the students only. It honestly is an amazing experience and I am so glad that I came here to this school.

Overall JWU does give you a bang for your buck, you really get to learn a lot about the business world as well as the Culinary industry. And the location makes it even better, because you are in downtown Charlotte. Some of the classes are in the Bank of America Corporate building. Many businesses contact JWU when looking for students for employment also.

There are SO many things to do on campus. We have many events that you can go to on campus, such as Movie Nights on certain Fridays of the month. Tie-Dye day where you make tie-dye t-shirts, Indoor Skydiving and ALOT more. We have a monthly calender that tells you about all the events that are happening each day of the month.

    Am learning a lot

Most of the professors are nice, and care about making sure that you do good in their classes. The class room size is a lot smaller than a regular public college, so you don't feel like just a number, and you have a better chance of getting help if you do not understand something.
