    Food and Dining

There are plenty of places to eat on campus. Where you live may make some of these locations more practical to frequent, overall the options aren't too bad. My meal plan supplies me with unlimited swipes at the Ville Grille, so I eat there often. It's buffet style and close to my dorm, so it makes the most sense for me. For those who live more on campus, the SAC provides plenty of options ranging from Subway to Papa John's. All of these places, including the mini grocery store "The POD" allow students to use meal swipes and/or flex points, which makes it pretty easy to eat on campus.

    Dorm Life

I live in a suite style dorm, so my impression of dorm life may be very different than that of someone who lives in a traditional style. Personally, I enjoy living in the dorms and even considered living in mine again next year. While my friends who live in traditional dorms may not have such a pretty view of dorm life, they still don't complain too much and are in my hall almost as much if not more than their own anyways.

    Academic Rigor

When it comes to rigor, the class and professor make all the difference. Some professors lecture and give a few tests while others give a multitude of assignments and require a lot of in-class participation. Most lower level classes aren't as rigorous as higher level, more major focused classes, but that's just a generalization.

    Tips for prospective students

My tips would just be to be smart. Don't forget why you're at college, which would be to get an education. Find that balance between your social and academic life and surround yourself with positive influences. Oh, and get an umbrella and some rain boots--when it rains, it pours.

    In three sentences

Louisville is a great place to be. The classes are diverse, the social scene is for partiers and non-partiers alike, and in the few short months here I've already met a lot of awesome people. If you're looking for a fun, affordable, and rewarding college, Louisville is it.

    What to do for fun

join a club! there was a sand volleyball court outside of my hall and i started playing one day, now i'm on the men's club team! my friend and i made an intramural team of a bunch of friends and played intramural and it was a lot of fun!

    Food and Dining

with your meal plan, you do have some options, but they do get old. i had the traditional meal plan and i never used all of the swipes or flex-points. the main dining hall, the ville grill, is alright. some people really love it, but i mainly liked their desserts. but there are other places on campus and with the new renovations, we are getting a panda express and a starbucks, so be excited!

    Dorm Life

for on campus housing, it really depends where you live and how you look at it. for my freshman year, i lived in threlkeld hall, the traditional dorm. it was 2 guys in 1 little room and a large bathroom for all 30 of us at the end of the hall. at first i was extremely nervous. but, i ended up not really minding the set-up and all of the guys grew really close as i made some great friends. it is really nice being able to go down the hall and ask someone with a like major for homework help.

    Academic Rigor

as an engineering student, the courses are rigorous. the drop out rate is rather high but if you stick together with friends and all of the resources like the tutoring center and sessions along with the extremely helpful staff and knowledgeable professors, you can succeed and come out having an extremely valuable degree

    Tips for prospective students

if you are thinking of coming here, i would advise to talk to people in your intended major. i am an engineering student and i came to campus and talked to some upperclassmen and counselors and they really helped to understand all of the wonderful things that uofl has to offer

    In three sentences

uofl is an amazing school. at first, i thought coming to a big school 2 hours away from my small hometown with no friends here would be a challenge, but i found lifelong friends in the first two months! uofl has great engineering programs and has wonderful dentistry and medical schools to continue your education at.

    What to do for fun

take advantage of louisville's many, many music festivals. just 4 blocks from campus they host a massive art show in october called the saint james art fair which is my favorite time of the year. the mega caverns are a lot of fun too with tours, obstacle courses, and underground zip-lining (terrifying). saint james court is a gorgeous little neighborhood to walk in with renovated mansions from the 1800's. behind the saint james court there is a park that hosts shakespeare in the park in the summer and is well maintained.

    Food and Dining

lots of options on campus both with smaller restaurants, coffee shops, and the ville grille. i frequent the coffee shops and enjoy the tulip tree cafe in the library with their patio out back for studying. they also have several restaurants just right off campus and they did set up a plan where your meal plan points can be used at the local gas station for fuel or at denny's.

    Dorm Life

unaffordable, both on campus and in u of l affiliated housing. u of l is located in a beautiful victorian neighborhood called old louisville and i recommend getting an apartment in one of the renovated old buildings in that neighborhood. the u of l apartments they are building are beautiful and up to date with granite counter tops, 50" screen tv's, and swimming pools but you will pay out the nose for these. in fact as a part of the marketing they hang signs out front stating "accepting financial aid now". do not go this route. tuition as of 2016 is already $11,068, there are lots of other affordable options.

    Academic Rigor

in my experience i did ask lots of questions about the most student-friendly professors and used rate my professor. instead of fighting to get into one good professor's class, they have lots of excellent teachers and provide a lot of tutoring and paper writing services.

    Tips for prospective students

the meal plan is mandatory (even for off campus students) and increases by $25 every year. as an off campus student the meal plan fee is now at $225. the gym fee is mandatory as well at $98 a semester for full time students and $45 for half-time. the u of l affiliated off campus housing starts at $600 a room for a 4 bedroom apartment and goes up to $950 for a one bedroom. as you plan to go to u of l, also factor in rising costs for each year and be pro-active about using their financial aid services to help you find scholarships. they have a system set up where you can submit one application and a team will match your scholarships to help you get additional funding.

    In three sentences

u of l has great college programs and extracurricular opportunities, however i am also critical of some of their fees and the rapidly increasing cost of tuition. there are lots of scholarships available from u of l and i cannot stress enough to take advantage of these as housing and the meals plans are not very affordable. with that said the campus is beautiful and they have excellent professors.

    Tips for prospective students

Get a parking permit if you commute. Parking at UofL is the worst. You'll have to park at the stadium but it's close to impossible to find a closer spot unless you live on campus. It's not a fair system at allmn

    Campus Safety

I have never had any issues on campus. I give 3 stars because others have and the downtown Louisville area is not very safe. Campus is patrolled, though.

    Greek Life

Many Fraternities and Sororities available. A large population of students on campus are involved. Careful, though, do not fall into the party trap--you will regret it.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Don't step on the Cardinal birds on the walkway!

    Bang for the buck

Tuition is expensive and keeps going up, which I do not agree with. However, the knowledge that I have attained from the University is valuable.

    What to do for fun

There are many athletic, intramural and other extracurricular activities available to participate in on campus. There are also many Fraternities and Sororities to join. I would suggest seeking out those opportunities on http://www.louisville.edu so you can search what interests you as there are far too many to list here!

    Food and Dining

Subway, Chic-Fil-A, Papa John's, Wendy's, McAlister's and other locations on campus take Cardinal Cards. Residents can use swipes at restaurants such as the Ville Grille. Other places close to campus include Qdoba, Quills, Comfy Cow and HomeRun Burger (which do not take Cardinal Cards).

    Academic Rigor

Tough but manageable. Most is very worthwhile.

    Tips for prospective students

Take a trip to the campus and see where your classes are before the first day. It can be confusing to map at first but you will get the hang of it. Attendance DOES matter. You WILL fail and waste money if you do not come to class and put forth the effort. It is not easy but it is worth it--you will gain a great deal of knowledge taking classes here.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is a very diverse campus with many opportunities for involvement. Most professors that I have had has been great--clear, organized, flexible and reasonable. The campus is very welcoming.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do around campus for fun, you can go watch a baseball, football, basketball game or any other various sporting events. There are also many clubs and intramural sports to get involved in.

    Food and Dining

There are various chooses every day at the dining halls or the Ville Grill, but there are also many fast food places as well as small mini marts to get food at.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are wonderful and there is a lot to do around campus. There are eateries within a couple blocks of the dorms as well as all the classrooms. Also, Louisville is a low cost of living city so houses and apartments are also very affordable.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are challenging (I took a dual credit course through duPont Manual High School), but they could be a little more engaging.

    Tips for prospective students

Be a well-rounded student, play sports, participate in clubs and do your hardest in school to get the best grades you possibly can.

    In three sentences

Beautiful school in the nice, urban city of Louisville. This college is located within 15 minutes of anything a person could want.

    Food and Dining

Campus food is ok, but thankfully there is many choices nearby.

    Dorm Life

Great if you want to party.

    Tips for prospective students

Be cautious of the affiliate leases for housing. Notice the acceleration clause hidden in the lease. They will stuff the unit with someone that has a Great Dane, parties too much, has all of their homeless friends over, etc. You are not renting the apartment, just your bedroom.

    In three sentences

A great school with many opportunities.

    Greek Life

I am not currently a part of Greek, but am hoping to join this semester. I know many people in it who absolutely love the experience.

Great for these types of students

A student looking for great academics, fantastic connections, endless possibilities, loads of fun, and a really neat atmosphere for the best four years of your life that are full of growth and learning.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Don't step on the Cardinal or you will not graduate in four years (if you go on a campus tour you will understand)!!!

    What to do for fun

Go to athletic events and go to the new Student Recreation Center! Both of which are free (except for football and men's basketball) and are a lot of fun and help you grow closer to new people.

    Food and Dining

This is probably one of the downsides to the university. Although it isn't bad I believe it has much room for improvement. Like many universities the meal plan is controlled by Sodexo, who gives too large of a meal plan so much of it ends up going to waste. The options aren't fantastic, but for being a college diet it is actually pretty good quality and you definitely won't go hungry.

    Dorm Life

This is my personal favorite part of the university. I am in a Living Learning Community, so I am in a community with people that have similar interests and are taking classes with me. This allows us to study and do work together which enhances our learning. We also do many activities as a community together and we have grown to be an extremely close group of friends that goes almost everywhere together.

    Academic Rigor

The classes can be tough at times, but I personally feel like the professors take a very good road to teach us well. The professors are all carrying out their own personal projects and research and will often include students or introduce their research as an extra thing to learn about in addition to the course load.

    Tips for prospective students

USE REACH TUTORING SERVICES!!!! They are absolutely free and come in handy whether you have a question on one homework assignment or are confused on an entire subject.

    In three sentences

I absolutely love the University of Louisville. The community is fantastic, accepting, and easy to get along with. It is also a great school for academics; the biochemistry program I am currently in is teaching me a ton.

    Campus Safety

We get occasional alerts of crime, but I've always felt safe. Just don't be dumb and walk somewhere alone in the middle of the night.

    Greek Life

If Greek Life is something you're interested in, then go for it. All the fraternities and sororities have either a house on Greek Row or a suite on the first floor of Community Park.

Great for these types of students

The University of Louisville is especially great for students going into business, engineering, and pre-med. These programs get a lot of attention from employers and give you a great chance of getting a job or going to grad school.

    Bang for the buck

Louisville is pretty good about giving out scholarships. The education and experiences you'll get here are as good as anywhere else.

    What to do for fun

Downtown Louisville has endless options for fun. If you like sports, then watch our Cardinals at the football stadium or the Yum Center. You could even attend a Louisville Bats game or watch horse racing at Churchill Downs. The Waterfront Park is great for nice days, and 4th Street Live is great for night life.

    Food and Dining

Some people complain about the food, but I like it. There are loads of options and restaurants if you don't want to eat at the dining hall, but even that isn't too bad. You definitely won't starve.

    Dorm Life

A dorm is a dorm. No matter where you go, it won't be luxurious. Kurz, Bettie Johnson, and Community Park are the best options to get away from the traditional dorm life.

    Academic Rigor

I'm an engineer in the Speed School of Engineering, so the academic rigor is pretty high. As long as you are well prepared from high school though, then nothing should be too much of a struggle. Just know when to study and when to have fun.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely get involved if you don't know anyone here. Our athletics programs are top notch, so even if you can't be a varsity athlete then the club and intramurals are great too. The quicker you can make friends, the quicker you'll feel at home.

    In three sentences

This is a great university for someone who wants the benefits of a large, urban campus with a small school feeling. It is a growing school with lots to offer. It truly is happening here.

    Food and Dining

If you like breakfast or pasta- you have two options- 2 UofL dining halls or go off campus. After midnight, if you're on campus, your only option is Papa Johns, coffee joints, or spending cash at Qdoba or Jimmy Johns and other restaurants. There are NOT a lot of options.

    Dorm Life

For Louisville to be so expensive, it could surely use some renovations. I went with the traditional dorms because I thought it'd be a good experience, but it is as bad as I heard it was. We constantly have mold outbreaks, nasty community bathrooms, and inconvenience via laundry rooms and air/heating.

    Academic Rigor

It is very difficult work at times. It is challenging. But you have SO many FREE resources around you that if you really need help- your needs won't go unmet. ALWAYS ASK FOR HELP AND STUDY. It is nothing like high school. Failing your first exam is not the end of the world- just a study habit lesson.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not take financial aid (scholarships, grants, etc) for granted. Try hard and do your best! It is EXTREMELY expensive even after the tuition, meal plan, books, and housing is paid. It's one thing I took for granted that I would change if I could.

    In three sentences

I'd rate Louisville a 4.1 star overall. The academics are a 5, but everything else is mediocre. You have to pay to get in games and the student apartments cost an OBSCENE amount of money (the average 4 bedroom 4 bath is $600. Seriously.). The expenses are insane and I am transferring because of it. But I DO enjoy the people and the academics. But other than that, it's usually boring and expensive.

    Campus Safety

I really feel safe walking at U of L at night. They have a huge emphasizes on campus safety and even offer escort services for students having to travel on campus after dark.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

DO NOT step on the cardinal bird in front of the Student Activities Center.

    Bang for the buck

Although U of L is a little more expensive than some of the other schools I feel like the exceptional academics and knowledgeable professors make it well worth the money. Also you get what you pay for and at U of L you pay for an adviser that meets with you one on one and truly knows your academics and what you need to succeed - you simply do not get that at some of the cheaper colleges.

    Food and Dining

The Ville Grill is the best food around hands down. There are also multiple fast-food places on campus and near campus for a quick bite to eat.

    Dorm Life

I haven't actually lived on campus yet but I am very excited to do so. Many of the upperclassman I have met said that living on campus was very fun and inclusive - I am hoping for the same experience but everything is what you make it.

    Academic Rigor

I feel like U of L challenges their students to excel and push themselves beyond the limits they thought they had.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit campus and talk to an adviser in the field you want to study. They are so helpful and it is nice to know at least one person (even if it is just your adviser) on campus before starting.

    In three sentences

Beautiful campus with a very inclusive student body. Academic achievement is emphasized equally with personal growth and having fun. All around a well-rounded campus environment.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is seriously lacking. The university has emergency call boxes placed throughout campus, but the majority of the time they are out of service. Clearly, safety is not a top priority for the University of Louisville. I receive emails weekly describing assaults on students. These emails appear to be the only action taken to prevent further assaults.

    Bang for the buck

Parking, printing, even Scantrons are not included. Even though my student fees paid for the new student center I still would have to pay to use it. This is not the place to get any bang for your buck. Students are viewed as a walking money sign at this school forced to pay for inadequate services that should already be included.

    What to do for fun

U of L is located close to many activities such as museums, baseball parks, and city nightlife.

    Food and Dining

The food options need to be updated to include more healthy options. U of L has plenty of fast food restaurants to pick from but very few healthy options.

    Dorm Life

The only nice dorms are the ones used by student athletes. The rest need some serious remodeling.

    Academic Rigor

I have found most courses to be adequately challenging. U of L has great professors with experience in their field.

    Tips for prospective students

Pick another school if you expect the administration to address your needs and concerns.

    In three sentences

U of L is only concerned with athletics, Speed school of engineering, and the heath sciences. All other programs are ignored and underfunded. Despite paying tuition and student activity fees I am still forced to pay for course related printing and provide my own Scranton for taking test in most of my courses.

    Greek Life

I LOVE U OF L'S GREEK LIFE! As different as all of the fraternities and sororities are, we have become close and supportive of one another. It is nothing like what is depicted in movies and TV shows. We are active on campus, we support various philanthropies and strive to have the highest GPA's on campus. It's not all about partying as many people believe.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

LEARN THE CARDS CHEER! A any given moment there can be an outbreak of cardinal spirit. Also, avoid walking on the cardinal heads that are painted on the ground all over campus. Don't ask why, just do it.

    What to do for fun

There are always events that are planned and are usually under $5 to get in to. The Students Activities Board always does a fantastic job at planning fun things around campus.

    Food and Dining

There are many options on campus to use flex points, but not very many to use meal swipes. towards the end of the year it is very difficult to use up leftover meal swipes, if you don't use them, you lose them.

    Dorm Life

I lived in Louisville Hall in a two bedroom suite. The room that I was assigned was terribly small for two people, while the other room in the suite was well suited for the two in the room. I would much rather live in a smaller suite and share a bathroom with 3 other people than have a larger room shared with one other person and have to share a bathroom with the entire hall.

    Academic Rigor

The classes I took this past semester were challenging. Be sure to go on ratemyprofessor.com and check out the professor.

    Tips for prospective students

Utilize all available resources. It is very easy to fall behind in classes and it is just as easy to get help. If an SI is available for a class, I suggest going to it. It will definitely help you.

    In three sentences

A wonderful institution that values it's students. U of L has many degree plans and is always looking out for the well-being of the students.

    Campus Safety

Campus is very safe thanks to our university police, who provide escort rides to students at night, the emergency help lights students can access throughout the campus, and the officers that constantly patrol the university during the day and night.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 300 recognized student organizations at UofL! And students can start there own; the requirements are that you have 3 members and a constitution. There is a ton to get involved in; something for everybody.

Great for these types of students

This campus is great for students who want to go to school in a city where there is lots to do, and a university that's big, but one where you still see people you know everyday.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The mascot for UofL is the cardinal bird; right outside of the SAC (Student Activities Center), there is a large cardinal painted in a circle. This area is sacred and no one ever steps on the bird; everyone walks around it.

    Bang for the buck

You will definitely get your money's worth!

    What to do for fun

For fun, I go to campus parties, hang out in the Cultural Center, attend programming in the Student Activities Center, and having PotLucks with friends who live on campus.

    Food and Dining

There are many dinning options at UofL. My only complaint is that there aren't more healthy options; there's lots of fast food places but not many places where they serve fresh fruits and vegetables.

    Dorm Life

I am biased as an RA, but I must say that life in our residence halls are fantastic! The staff is friendly and supportive, the rooms are comfortable, the bathrooms are nice and cleaned every week day; its nice!

    Academic Rigor

Classes are challenging, but not beyond what one can handle with effort.

    Tips for prospective students

I would recommend taking a tour of the campus, attending a class with a current student, and having a meeting with a admissions office counselor before deciding to come to the university. Its good to have a feel for the campus life and environment before arriving. I would also suggest taking a class in the summer or maybe the semester before you enroll in a full-time schedule, just so you can get used to the academic pace at UofL. As a Resident Assistant at UofL, I certainly recommend living on campus your first year; this is great for community building, and having a great support system.

    In three sentences

On a scale of 1-10, I give the University of Louisville a 7. I have had a wonderful experience at UofL, mostly because of all the services and support that the university supplies, for free! Academics are certainly important, and UofL does a great job of insuring a great education, but they also strive to make life outside the classroom positive and this is what makes UofL so great for me.

    Campus Safety

UofL is located in downtown Louisville, so it can be expected that there would be some issues with safety. It isn't uncommon to hear of someone being robbed, or someone having their car broken in to. However, campus officials have been working to improve campus safety by installing emergency towers in various locations throughout campus where you can push a button to alert campus police. They have also started an escort program that will pick you up and take you to your car or dorm when it is dark outside.

    Greek Life

I am a member of The University of Louisville's greek life and I love it. It is not your stereotypical Greek row where students are getting in trouble every single weekend for housing raging parties on campus. All of the Greeks on campus are friendly to one another, and love some friendly competition when it comes to the annual Fryberger Greek-Sing and intramural sports. My sorority is where I have found some of my best friends and people who will support me throughout my college years.

    Clubs and Activities

Like I have said before, there is so much to do! There are hundreds of student organizations (RSO) to get involved in and every semester they have an RSO fair that introduces all of the clubs to students wanting to get involved.

Great for these types of students

University of Louisville is great for the students who want to get involved and make the most out of their college years. There is something for every student since UofL has been rated one of the most diverse colleges in the nation.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

There is a white circle with a cardinal bird mascot painted in it, on the sidewalk leading to the Student Activities Center (SAC), you don't ever walk on it, you walk around it. Stepping on it is bad luck! We also have crazy white squirrels that roam the campus, and it's a tradition to try and spot the white squirrel. Also, there is a statue of a dancing lady outside the library, sometimes people dress her in random clothes since she doesn't really have clothes painted on her.

    Bang for the buck

I definitely feel like UofL has deserved every penny that I have given them. The professors are highly qualified, the campus is beautiful, the facilities are nice, and there are so many ways to get involved. I think that the type of experience you have in college is really up to you. If you want to have a great experience, you have to put in the work and effort to make it good, and to take advantage of all the opportunities set before you. I think that The University of Louisville has given me all of those opportunities.

    What to do for fun

There is so much to do on campus for fun. There are over 200 recognized student organizations (RSO's) on campus to get involved in. Many of them incorporate community service into them, which looks great on resumes. These RSO's include academic based, religious, intramural sports, greek life, student government and so much more. The university recently built a state-of-the-art recreation center for students that is home to the workout facilities and all intramural sports activities. Intramural sports is a huge part of student and greek life on campus, and is a lot of fun!

    Food and Dining

If The University of Louisville lacks in one particular area it would be the quality of their food. They're are many options available as to where you can eat. They're are several popular fast food restaurants on campus that you can use your flex dollars from your meal plan at, and they're is the Ville Grille which is the campus cafeteria. The cafeteria is very hit or miss. Sometimes you go in and the food is great and other times it really just isn't. They often recycle the same menu week after week, so you can get tired of the food really quickly.

    Dorm Life

I have been VERY pleased with the residence halls here. I live in a suite-styled dorm where two rooms share a bathroom. There are many dorms on campus that have been built or renovated within the past 10 years so they are very nice. Every member of the residence assistant teams that I have met have been extremely helpful with any roommate issue or any other dorm related issue I have encountered. Most RA's schedule programs that residents can participate in throughout each semester (they usually involve free food.)

    Academic Rigor

Professors at the Univeristy of Louisville expect a lot out of their students. They expect 100 percent effort all the time. However, with UofL being a very active school when it comes to student involvement, professors are understanding. They know that their class isn't the only thing you have on your schedule and are often pretty flexible if need be.

    Tips for prospective students

One tip I would give to prospective students is that when going through the orientation session in the summer don't let your ACT or SAT score dictate which classes you take. If i had to label one flaw that UofL had during the orientation process it would be that when registering incoming freshman for courses, they often only looked at ACT scores to place you in certain upper level courses. Just because you scored high on a specific part of the ACT doesn't mean you are ready for a higher level class. If you feel you may need to take a pre-requisite course, speak up and let them know.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is a University that strives enrich student's lives through not only education in required courses but education on how to be an effective member of your community. It is a wonderful university with very skilled professors who deeply care about each of their students success in career and life. I have found The University of Louisville to excel in all areas including education courses, social life, student organizations, resident halls, and greek life.

    Campus Safety

The campus of the University of Louisville can seem pretty sketchy sometimes because its not really well lit but overall the campus is still very safe. There are blue light booths which connect you with the public safety department and with this, if for some reason you're afraid of walking the campus by yourself at night, there is an escort service that will take you to where you need to go, as long as you do not abuse the mentioned system.

    Greek Life

It is estimated that approximately half of the student body at the University of Louisville is involved in Greek Life, so some might say its a big deal but it really doesn't matter if you're in a frat/sorority or not. Everyone is just laid back and aren't very confrontational.

    Clubs and Activities

There are many different clubs and student activities whether its the Lesbian Gay Straight Alliance, Student Council, Student Government, or the Resident Student Association. With the University of Louisville also being in a major city, there are plenty of volunteer opportunities as well.

Great for these types of students

The University of Louisville is the most beneficial to Medical Students and Law Students because the Guaranteed Entrance programs. Louisville however is probably most known for their dental school as well as their Engineering program.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only quirk the University of Louisville has is the rule to never step on the cardinal bird. There are several paintings of the cardinal logo on the side walks around campus and you will just about always see people go around the logo. There are several rumors about why its exactly done, some say its because there was someone who stepped on it and then failed all of her tests, while others tell a story of an opposing school's football team stepping all over it, disrespecting it and then losing to the Cards 42-0.

    Bang for the buck

At the University of Louisville, students get to go to every tennis match, soccer game, volleyball game, women's basketball game, baseball game, and swim meet for free. With this, Kentucky Kingdom is less than 5 miles from campus and with it just now reopening this upcoming year, season passes range from about 40-60 bucks, and when compared to any other major amusement parks, its a steal of a price.

    What to do for fun

There are many things to do at the University of Louisville, whether its attend the sporting events such as basketball, football, or baseball games, going to see the gigantic firework display known as the Thunder Over Louisville, and going to the Infield during the Kentucky Derby. While there are these attractions, Louisville is a major city as well. There is the Louisville Slugger Museum, 4th Street Live, and even an art show in downtown Louisville during the Fall. Needless to say there is always something to do here.

    Food and Dining

The food and dining at the University of Louisville is average to say the least. There are plenty of places to eat, but these places for the most part only accept flex which is technically apart of the meal plan but basically acts as real money. There are only 3 places where students get to use their actual meal plan, known as swipes and the food there is okay but after a while, students can easily get burnt out on their options.

    Dorm Life

While the dorms at the University of Louisville are not in the best of shape other than Kurz Hall and Bettie Johnson Hall, they are a detrimental part of the university itself. With these dorms a strong sense of community is created, especially from the student organization known as RSA (Resident Student Association). RSA creates events within each dorm throughout campus and combines the dorms in a unique way that connects people that may not have met otherwise. Overall, its not about how the actual dorms look but rather the community within them that truly matters which is why the dorm life is ranked as 4 stars.

    Academic Rigor

This academic rigor ranking comes from the J.B Speed School of Engineering program offered through the University of Louisville. The classes for this program are very challenging and very demanding of students but it is in order to get them ready for the engineering profession. Next Spring semester I will be attending my first Co-Op experience and because of all the difficult Speed School classes I've taken I feel more prepared than I would if I attended any other university.

    Tips for prospective students

For any students considering on attending the University of Louisville, simply acknowledge the fact that college is a lot more difficult than high school. While in high school, you might not have had to study too much to get an A in the class but college is a different story. Even general education classes can surprise you if you don't prepare for them. While a perfect 4.0 throughout college can seem very difficult, do not just give up and take a C or D in your classes. Sure you may not want to study for your classes or maybe even just attend them but employers tend to use a GPA requirement system where they wont even glance at your application unless you meet their criteria.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is a unique college experience, encompassing both the college experience as well as the city life infused within it. The University of Louisville is the most diverse college in Kentucky and with all of that diversity comes acceptance and toleration for others. It's easily one of the best universities in the U.S not necessarily from academics stand-point but for the overall experience shared from all of the students.

    Food and Dining

The food selection needs great improvement. In the Student Activity Center, there are less than 10 restaurant options and they are mostly unhealthy options. I also find that the prices are overly expensive.

    Academic Rigor

At Speed School, which is the engineering department, it is very rigorous. Although it can be tough, it is a great program in that it prepares you well for the future. Three co-ops are required for graduation there and in 5 years you can earn a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree. As far as I know, the other departments are not as demanding, but they also train you well for the future.

    Tips for prospective students

Work hard that first year. If you have a scholarship do whatever it takes to keep it. Find what studying style works for you and what your distractions are and be sure to study properly and not get distracted while studying. For example, it's ok to check your Facebook before you sit down to study, but once you're finished with it, stay off of it and focus on nothing but the work.

    In three sentences

Overall this school is well organized in terms of participating in programs, classes, and everything else. In general, the teachers make an effort to be helpful. The atmosphere is good in that the students there are dedicated and want to do well.

    Campus Safety

I don't usually feel unsafe on campus during the day but at night it can be a little scary. Also there are a lot of email alerts of robberies and shootings around campus or on campus that makes me feel very uneasy. Just be smart and cautious and you should be just fine.

    What to do for fun

For fun at UofL you can go to one of the many organization events that are held on campus. Dances and recreational sports are big at the school. There are many ways to get involved and have some fun.

    Food and Dining

The Ville Grille is the All-You-Can-Eat cafeteria on campus that many students eat at. UofL has many different choices food wise such as the Ville Grille, McAllisters, Wendy's, Subway, Heine Brothers, and a salad bar. The food is pretty good!

    Dorm Life

Dorm life is great for the most part but I stayed in the suite-style dorms part of my freshman year. This wasn't the best decision because I didn't get to meet as many people which is very important! But dorm life was overall great for me.

    Academic Rigor

Academic rigor is all dependent on the major you choose at The University of Louisville I believe. The Nursing program at UofL is what I have been a part of for the last year and a half. This major is very rigorous and competitive. Other rigorous majors at the school are the Speed School and business school.

    Tips for prospective students

Prospective students should most definitely choose a major that they would enjoy. The students who really aren't into their major they have chosen tend to do poorly because they just do not care or have the drive. Take your time and shop around when it comes to majors if you aren't totally driven towards one in particular (or are for the wrong reasons).

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is a school that is continually rising in the classroom and in its athletic programs. I believe that the school should put more importance and promotion for the great opportunities and majors that are available to students there. Athletics do seem to take almost all of the spotlight and importance when the school is discussed.

I like how there are many clubs to join and different honors societies such as the PSI CHI which I hope to join soon. Although college is expensive, I know this college will give me the best for my degree and prepare me for my future career as a clinical psychologist.

    What to do for fun

UofL has many activities and sports on campus. There are always events and clubs advertising for you to join. Although I am not involved in any due to work, i know there is plenty out there.

    Food and Dining

There are many places to eat on campus and around campus such as Wendys, Jimmy Johns, and subway. I wish there were more places open for people who have evening classes because we need to eat too.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in a dorm so it's hard to rate what these are like. When I took a tour, the dorms were small and tight fitting but liveable. I haven't heard too many complaints on dorms.

    Academic Rigor

This university has great academics with challenging assignments and tests. The lectures coincide with what we see on quizzes and work so we are prepared for what lies ahead. You learn alot through lectures, videos, events, and others personal experiences. I have learned more at UofL than I have in high school and community college.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips I would give to prospective students is to make sure you get your financial aid process completed immediately as it takes a long time to process and get everything ready for that semester. I would also be ready to get alot of excercise as there's alot of walking involved on campus.

Campus offers tons of student organizations for anything you can think of. They also sponsor cheap movie days in the SAC where you can watch pretty current movies every week, and there are always events happening on campus that you can find. Plus, there are a lot of off campus events happening around the city.

Food on campus is hard to find for cheap. Most meals are $7 or $8 and there's a lot of fast food. Search for the healthy options though! And if you love to eat, pay up at the Ville Grille, it's unlimited food while you're there!

    Campus Safety

Although I have always felt safe on campus, and security cars and emergency boxes are numerous around the school, there are plenty of crimes committed on campus which are detailed in emails sent out nearly every two weeks.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of clubs, sports, interest groups, language clubs, etc. If people are interested in it, UofL probably has a club devoted to it. And if they don't, starting one is not difficult.

    Bang for the buck

At UofL, you only pay for 12 credit hours a semester (if you are a full time student) so if you plan to take over 12 hours, it's a nice change from colleges that charge you per course. However, Online courses are nearly twice the amount of regular courses, and parking is crowded (usually impossible) and expensive.

    What to do for fun

UofL has tons of clubs and sports to join, from religious organizations to language clubs and special interest groups. Greek life is pretty active as well, if you are interested in fraternities/sororities, and weekly emails inform students about campus wide events, from yoga and massages to guest lectures. You can pretty much always find something to do. And if you want to go beyond the campus, downtown Louisville is full of restaurants, museums, theaters, and places to see.

    Food and Dining

There are a lot of restaurants on campus, from pizza places to a sandwich bar to the Ville Grill which is set up more like a cafeteria. Plenty of variety for everyone...just don't go around noon. You'll never find a place to sit.

    Dorm Life

The only 'dorm' I stayed in was Cardinal towne, the apartments, but I found them ridiculously expensive and parking on campus is a joke.

    Academic Rigor

The quality of the professors varies greatly. In most cases, you're going to get out of your classes what you put into them. I've had classes that demanded hours and hours of homework a week, and classes where my only concern was the final exam.

    Tips for prospective students

Make sure you keep track of your classes and what you need to graduate. Also, attendance may not always be mandatory, but participation is often a factor in your final grade and although most professors are accommodating to a degree, if you skip all of your classes, don't expect to do well.

    In three sentences

    Academic Rigor

Depends on your major, obviously, but some classes can be very difficult and you actually need to study.

    Tips for prospective students

Don't come right out of high school and think this is 'easy'. Some classes may be easy, but what you were doing in high school is not going to fly for college. Be realistic and listen to upper classmen about classes and what you need to do. Listen to your advisors, do not blow them off. Talk to your professors, get to know them, develop relationships. They are the ones giving you the final grade, after all. Don't be afraid to talk to them in their office.

Classes are taken very seriously. But don't let this deter you. They have a student and faculty ran tutoring program called REACH. They also provide after class review sessions ran by students who have already passed the specific class.

The campus police take their job very seriously. They are available at all times of the day and encourage people to call them if they are alone at night and need to be escorted. There also many blue emergency boxes which are basically phones that connect to the nearest UofL police station. There are also rave alerts for all students that tell what crimes happened where and when on campus. However, it is still really dangerous at night. There have been reports of drugs and thiefs. Be careful!

Do not step on the Cardinal Bird. Legend has it that any enemy team who steps on our bird gets creamed by our team no matter what sport. Expect to see albino squirrels. Beware they are huge and have scary red eyes!

There are so many dining options on campus from fast food to salad bars. The food plan is also very generous with plenty of flex points for certain restaurants on campus as well as $610 extra for the restaurants not covered by the flex points. In addition, you can change your food plan so that you have more money but less flex points or vice versa.

    Dorm Life

There are plenty of options for living quarters on campus as well as the option of living off of campus. I would recommend living on campus though because it's easier to get to classes that way and you spend more time studying than traveling.

Meals is to get one meal and swipes is by the dollar (this will be on your Cardinal Card). Food Courts would be Global Market, Mein Bowl, Subway, Chick-Fil-A, Freshens, Wendy's, Quick Zone, Seasons, Papa John's, etc. Campus Restaurants are Jazzman's Cafe, McAllister's, Sub Hub, ZeBi, etc. There are also convenience restaurants like The Nest. Crime reports are emailed to everyone on campus a few times a month but they usually aren't in the middle of campus. They're around the outside of campus like at the apartments near campus. People don't get killed or anything extreme but they do get robbed and approached by robbers.

    Greek Life

U of L offers many of the fraternities and sororities there are and they are successful at providing community service and hosting great on campus events. They are also proud of their high GPAs and academic achievement that they balance with parties and having fun

    Clubs and Activities

There is many different recognized student organizations that each has their own schedule. Many sporting activities are held for the successful sports teams U of L has and its always exciting to go to the packed games to cheer on the Cards.

    Food and Dining

The 20 places to eat on campus range from places to get a quick bite, or a place to sit down and dine like your at an actual restaurant. The meal plan is worth the money because it a lot of meals can be eaten with the use of meal swipes. Good food options are at every eating location on campus and even more food locations will be added once the recreation centers finished being built in the fall. Healthy options are also available.

    Dorm Life

The traditional dorms don't have the best conditions but the relationships you'll gain with other residents can turn into life long friendships. The better dorms cost more but they're worth the price because they'll have everything you'll need as a student. Since all dorms are close to campus, they make it easy to be near all the on campus activities everyday.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are challenging and a lot of studying will need to be done to do well in your courses like major courses. A lot of people seem to struggle with classes that require a lot of studying when they don't do enough studying. It seems a lot of people change their initial declared major when they struggle from not studying enough.

    Tips for prospective students

Try living on campus your first year if possible because it lets you gain the full college experience. Try to do well in your general education courses so your GPA isn't too low if you don't do well in major courses. Try to use the available academic resources like REACH if you're struggling with a course.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety could seriously use some improvement. They offer many great things, like the escort service and blue lights around campus that notifies the police of what's wrong and where you are with the push of a button. However, it takes campus police entirely too long to arrive to assist you. Fortunately I've never had to use it, but I honestly dread the day I need it.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs and activities for everyone in every discipline. There is Greek Life for those interested in sororities or fraternities. There are specific clubs for each School of Business discipline, such as Econ Club, Card Shirt (marketing), etc. This school offers everything you could ask for, and if it doesn't, just make it. The University encourage students to start programs and groups if they don't already offer it.

Great for these types of students

This school is great for students willing to put in effort, looking for a job right after college, and wanting a great college experience.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We do have one unusual tradition. There is a Cardinal Bird head at the bottom of the ramp leading to the Student Activities Center. If you step on the Bird rather than walking around it, you have to kiss it.

    What to do for fun

There is a lot to do for fun on campus. Every weekend, there are two movies that students can get in for only $2. There are also free pool tables and ping-pong tables we can play on. Sometimes the University is putting on a play or musical that we can attend, too. Those are pretty frequent, and from what I understand, very entertaining.

    Food and Dining

There are quite a few options on campus. The Ville Grill is the cafeteria type restaurant. They have many food options every day, and it's all you can eat for one swipe off your meal plan. There are also options that are on campus, but not on the meal plan. In the Student Activities Center, there are choices in there as well, such as Subway, Wendy's, and Papa John's. I only wish there were healthier choices since the freshman 15 is a pretty big concern of mine.

    Dorm Life

I love living in the dorm. I chose to have a random roommate, and that helped me a lot. She was a year older, so she helped me learn about campus, and it taught me a lot about how people can differ. I enjoy hanging out in the lobby. There are always people down there playing games, singing and playing guitar, or watching movies. It is a great experience living on campus.

    Academic Rigor

The academic rigor for the business school is intense. I know this because I am enrolled in the College of Business. We must maintain a 3.0 GPA, or we are kicked out. I know that it must be the same across the board because I've heard many people in the School of Engineering and nursing school say the same thing. It isn't quite as strict for them, but we are all held to a high standard academically.

    Tips for prospective students

I would suggest staying on campus. Although parking is sometimes a hassle, you get the full college experience living on the campus, and it is a great atmosphere. I would also recommend trying out a few introductory classes in things you're interested in before you declare a major. It isn't necessary to rush into something that you don't see yourself doing, or something you think you like, but then after a class it turns out you hate it.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is very accommodating. They offer very many choices for careers and have excellent and helpful professors. It is a great school when it comes to preparing you for the real world and the work force.

    Food and Dining

The food is pretty good compared to other college dining services! The Heinie Brothers coffee shop is great.

    Dorm Life

The residence halls are not the worst that you will see, but they are college dorms. There's nothing too special in the freshmen accommodations.

    Academic Rigor

If you stay on top of your work the load isn't overwhelming.

    Tips for prospective students

It's vital to go in with the right mindset! College can be a tough transition, but the professors at the University of Louisville typically help ease that transition and build good study skills.

The University of Louisville is a great place to learn for people motivated by education. There are plenty of recreational opportunities as well. The professors lay a foundation that a student can truly build upon.

    Campus Safety

Because the school is located in such a large city, the campus and surrounding are never going to be perfectly safe. The campus police do a great job of responding to calls, but one must take proper safety precautions.

    Greek Life

The Greek life on campus is huge. There is a fraternity or sorority for everyone that is interested. They usually run the party scene and offer many different events and volunteer opportunities for everyone.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs on campus for just about anything, and if there is not one you like it is extremely easy and fun to start a new one. These clubs and activities are available to everyone, allowing anyone to be involved.

Great for these types of students

The university is great for any type of student. It is such a diverse community that welcomes anyone and gives everyone a place to feel that they fit in.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

The only unusual tradition on campus is not stepping on the cardinal. There are paintings of the Cardinal bird on the sidewalks across campus and apart from the ridicule you will receive for stepping on it, it is also considered bad luck.

    Bang for the buck

As an out of state student, it seems that there is always money that I am trying to find to help pay for school. Unfortunately the Financial Aid office has not proven to be very helpful.

    What to do for fun

There are many opportunities for fun. Two of the biggest ones are intramural sports and greek life. Intramural sports are a great way to stay active, make friends and have fun. They are as competitive as you want them to be, but also easy to access. Greek life is very big on campus. Being a part of a fraternity or sorority gives you access to friends and connections that you may not otherwise have. Even if you are not part of greek life, you can find fun in the parties and events they host.

    Food and Dining

The food options are very good at the university. The only problem with the dining services is the craziness at lunchtime. At about 12:15 everyday the food court becomes overcrowded with long lines and large amounts of people. This makes things hectic and difficult to get food in a quick fashion.

    Dorm Life

The dorms at uofl, especially the new ones are extremely nice. You have the privacy of your own bathroom in some cases, while also having the opportunity to meet and make friends with your hall mates. They are not overly strict when it comes to noise and visitors, which makes it easy to have fun without having to worry about being up all night.

    Academic Rigor

The courses are as challenging as you make them. If you work hard and study, you will see the results, but you cannot just sit back and expect everything to be easy.

    Tips for prospective students

As a prospective student, I would recommend taking advantage of every opportunity available. Once you realize that this is only to help better your future, while also having fun, it will be too late to take advantage of everything. By starting early, you are preparing yourself for what is to come and making things easier down the road.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is one of the best universities I could have chosen. It is like a small city, with many different types of peoples and opportunities. The staff is there to do nothing but be helpful and make your experience worthwhile.

Some fun things to do are going to the sporting events, participate in different groups or clubs. Go get a workout at the gym. Also intramural teams can be fun and you will meet different people.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of places to eat on campus and around campus. Do not worry there are also healthy choices. You will probably eventually get sick of campus food and begin cooking your own meals.

    Dorm Life

I love dorm life! It is better than being at home because you get to meet a lot of new people, and participate in different things that you would not be able to do living at home. I believe everyone should try the dorm life at least for a year.

    Academic Rigor

The University of Louisville has great academics! My advice is time management and use all sources available to you on campus, it really helps!

    Tips for prospective students

If you are looking for a good college that has a great campus atmosphere and high quality teachers, you should look into U of L.

There are many different dining choices on campus, which is great for people who love to eat..like me!

    Dorm Life

I have not lived in a dorm on campus here. I live about 20 minutes away so I commute

    Tips for prospective students

Don't be afraid to use a campus map! The campus is not that big, but there are a lot of buildings so it can be difficult to figure out where you're going at first. Also, branch out and talk to people in your classes as well as around campus, your professors especially. College is a great time to make important connections, so do not miss out on it!

    In three sentences

The campus isn't as big as it seems and its beautiful. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming all over the place. The professors I've had are very helpful and sincerely concerned about the futures of their students.

Ville Grille had the best breakfast and pizza! There are many places to eat on campus that you are probably more familiar with like Wendy's, Papa John's, Chick-FIl-A, Subway. and these places accept your meal plan. There are even more great places to eat at around campus.

    Dorm Life

    Academic Rigor

UofL is an excellent school with many programs that are challenging and interesting. The main focus on campus in all programs is research and academia which can be frustrating at times because more goes into making a well-rounded student. I'll be very proud however to graduate with my degree from UofL.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

Campus safety at UofL is probably my biggest issue. While I personally have never felt unsafe walking on campus, I am unnerved every time I get an e-mail about an incident, even very minor, that has occurred on campus. As with all schools, you should never walk alone, especially at night. Students should also be vigilant and aware of any unusual behavior. Many of my friends and myself also carry pepper spray at all times in case we need to fend off an attacked. Also the University of Louisville was named as I believe the 9th most crime-stricken campus. I am not trying to be pessimistic, but I believe that students should have a fair and real picture of the universities they are considering.

    Greek Life

Around 20% of students at the University of Louisville are involved in Greek Life. One thing I love about Greek Life at UofL is that all students, Greek and non-Greek, interact with one another as equals. I have been told that at other universities their is animosity between Greeks and non-Greeks, but this is not the case at UofL. Every Greek and non-Greek that I know spends time frequently with someone who is the opposite of what they are (ie: a Greek spends a large about of time with a non-Greek and vice versa).

    Clubs and Activities

As stated before, the University of Louisville has over 300 recognized student organizations (RSO's), so there should be a club or activity for everyone. If you do not find something to suit your interests, students can create a new RSO.

Great for these types of students

The University of Louisville is great for students who are looking to experience diversity. It is also great for students who are pre-professional because of three programs. UofL has guaranteed entrance to medical (GEMS), law (Harlan Scholars), and dental (ULead) school programs. These programs accept a select number of high school seniors who, after completing their undergrad at UofL, are automatically accepted to medical, law, or dental school, respectively.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

All over campus there are Cardinal birds painted on the ground. If you visit or attend the University of Louisville, do not step on the bird! You will be cursed! Also the university has an albino squirrel population which we are very proud of. If you get a picture of one while on a visit, you will receive a free t-shirt.

    Bang for the buck

The University of Louisville gives excellent scholarships, especially when being compared to another Kentucky university which I will not name. UofL takes pride in rewarding the rich academic success of their students by offering large scholarships to prospective students. The University of Louisville offers a quality education for an average price, at least for universities in Kentucky.

    What to do for fun

The University of Louisville and the city of Louisville offer innumerable things to do. UofL has over 300 recognized student organizations, so there are tons of ways to get involved. To have fun, I enjoy going to movies that are shown very cheap every weekend on campus and to sporting events. The Cardinal athletic teams are playing very well this fall, and it is an amazing experience to be a part of the student section, especially at football games for our currently undefeated, 8-0, Cards! There are also many things to do off-campus for fun such as going to the Louisville Zoo, the Louisville Slugger Mueseum, or to Churchill Downs.

    Food and Dining

The Ville Grill, which you may hear called Westside, is decent but not the best food on campus. A frustrating issue is that meal swipes may only be used here or at the Global Market, which I have yet to try because I have heard it is not the best either. I do however enjoy all of the other many dining options on campus. My only complaint is that the hours are not the greatest, so the only place you can satisfy your late night munchies are Papa John's or the yummy Tulip Tree Cafe in the library.

    Dorm Life

Although my dorm had to be cleaned for mold, I have truly enjoyed living on campus. I live in the Honors' dorm, Threlkeld Hall, and I would not change it for the world. I cannot speak for the other halls, but I know that it is hard to feel alone or be bored in Threlkeld. Students are constantly in the lobby studying, playing pool, having a movie night, or sometimes all three! My hall mates and myself frequently find ourselves losing track of time and simply sitting in the hall or our rooms talking for hours on end. To sum up my dorm experiences at UofL, I have loved my time at Threlkeld Hall and would not trade it for anything!

    Academic Rigor

As a science major, thee University of Louisville is difficult. But with the proper amount of studying and determination, students can excel in classes. In my experience, professors want to see students succeed and offer multiple opportunities to ask questions in class and meet personally to help learn difficult concepts. UofL also offers a multitude of services, for free, to help students comprehend and excel in the academic arena.

    Tips for prospective students

Students who are considering UofL should visit the University. If possible, a shadow visit is the most beneficial type of visit, in my opinion. I was honored to speak about the University of Louisville with my former high school, and this is one of the things I stressed most. Visiting campus allows you to imagine how your life would be as a student there. A shadow visit even allows you to sit in on a few classes and to, usually, meet professors who will become your teachers in the coming years.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville has a wide variety of majors, a diverse student group, and a large amount of recognized student organizations. The University of Louisville, or UofL for short, provides a quality education and immerses students in an array of cultures and programs flawlessly. To be fair, UofL is not the perfect fit for all students, and I know quite a few who are transferring next semester.

    Campus Safety

I feel that campus safety is a priority at U of L. It seems like there is always security around and that there is security available if needed. Also, my dorm is very secure and you need a swipe card to enter and must sign your guests in after hours.

    Greek Life

I have only met a couple of people involved in Greek life, but I am not involved in it. It seems like a fun way to go, if it's for you.

    Clubs and Activities

There are so many clubs and activities to join and participate in. I have met some people who don't do any activities, and then there's some who do 4 or 5 activities on campus. I am a cheerleader so that keeps me busy and I really don't have time for anything else but I have met those who play soccer and enjoy doing Orientation tours and all kinds of other things to belong to.

Great for these types of students

All types of students can find their niche: old and young, quiet and shy as well as outgoing and active. Many things to do for all and many friends to make with all of the different types of people that you will meet.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Homecoming is so fun with lots of activities and fun things for all to see and experience.

    What to do for fun

There is plenty of activities to do, both on campus and off campus. There are parties, and sporting events-most of which are free with your college ID, and there's plenty of opportunities to meet new people on campus and off by looking into the Student Activities.

    Food and Dining

The Ville Grill is an all you can eat dining hall that our meal plan is accepted at and it has great food. There are plenty of other food choices within walking distance from our dorms and there are great restaurants within driving distance also.

    Dorm Life

My dorm is the best place to live, with a private bedroom, kitchen, sitting room and semi-private bathroom that I share with my one roommate. It has a workout room, a computer room, a media room to hang out and watch movies and TV shows, and we have a pool, outdoor grills, outdoor courtyard, and a sand volleyball court. It's like living in a condo but all on your own with lots of amenities, and not like a dorm at all, but on campus!

    Academic Rigor

The classes are challenging at the University of Louisville, yet there is help available in all areas of study, whether you need one-on-one help, individualized instruction within groups, or teaching assistant-led review sessions. There is always someone in any of my classes that are looking for study partners, which I find to be helpful in preparing for quizzes, tests, or even going over a paper with someone.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out the University of Louisville for their Nursing Program as well as their extracurriculars; it's a school situated in a beautiful town with great opportunities. I would highly recommend you to look at the University of Louisville for Health related programs and their athletic teams. I thoroughly enjoy the classes, the atmosphere, the students, and cheering at the University of Louisville.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is an excellent college with an outstanding health/science program. I am interested in the Nursing Program at the University of Louisville's Nursing Program because of their Instructor's qualifications and background and the surrounding medical centers. The Biology and Chemistry classes at U of L provide a sound basis for Nursing Theories.

    What to do for fun

The opportunities are endless: SGA programs, the Interfaith center programs, intermural sports, and all manner of strange/unique concerts and entertainment.

    Food and Dining

The options are fairly impressive, and they are also conveniently spread throughout campus. The service is good as well. Student workers do take their jobs seriously!

    Dorm Life

I cannot comment on the dorm life because I do not live in the dorms, but I do notice that students who live in the dorms have some fun options. I pass a dorm that has a sand-pit volleyball court just outside its front door when I walk to class.

    Academic Rigor

The academics are definitely rigorous. You must be dedicated to your field of study and willing to devote the appropriate time and effort. I wanted to attend an institution where the academic standards were high, and University of Louisville has met this expectation.

    Tips for prospective students

Do not overlook University of Louisville; its small class sizes, city surroundings, unique progams, and endless professional development opportunities make it an excellent school.

    In three sentences

My program, Humanities Ph.D with a concentration in Creativity and Aesthetics, is one of the most unique in the country. It offers students who do not wish to have a terminal MFA degree with the opportunity to earn a Ph.D with an emphasis in Creative Writing. Surrounding city has it's darker element, as does any major city in the country, but the school does everything it can to make it's campus safer. Escorts are available 24/7 to take you anywhere within a 3 block radius.

    Greek Life

A very active part of the campus. These are not your typical Fraternities or Sororities!

    Clubs and Activities

Hundreds of clubs and activities to choose from. If you can't find what you're looking for, you can create the club yourself!

Great for these types of students

Athletes, In-state students, students interested in Greek Life, anyone considering Law School or Medical School.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

We have a Thinker Statue on campus which is an amazing landmark to see on a school campus. Make sure you avoid stepping on the Cardinal Bird painted on the ground throughout the school; it's thought to be bad luck and you don't need to add the stress of bad luck to your academic career. Also, keep an eye out for the elusive White Squirrel!!!

    Bang for the buck

Great deal for in state students. If you're an out of state student, make sure you do your due diligence when it comes to financial aid. Most of the time, it will not cover your full cost of attendance.

    What to do for fun

There is plenty to do for fun, if you pay attention. Active Greek life on campus, as well as dorm hall activities. Tons of clubs to be involved with, and a great sports scene! They don't call Louisville the best sports town in America for nothing! Check out a Football game at Papa John's Stadium or a basketball game down at KFC YUM! Center.

    Food and Dining

Plenty of eating options on and off campus. Off campus eateries are either a short walk, or short bus ride, away. Generally, won't take you more than ten minutes to find some food.

    Dorm Life

Could use some fine tuning. Sometimes you are housed with someone who is your complete opposite which can make for a very difficult school year. It would be great if they could place you according to likes/dislikes, year in school...etc.

    Academic Rigor

Some courses require more critical thinking than others. Courses become more rigorous as you progress into upper division courses. Great preparation for continuing education after a Bachelor's degree.

    Tips for prospective students

Research everything that you may have a question about. If you can't find the information online, call and speak with someone.

Though I wouldn't recommend walking around campus at night, they have escorts around campus and police can get to any location in under a minute. If you are at the library late, there is a security guard on duty at all times to keep you safe.

    Greek Life

I personally am involved in greek life, so my opinion is a little biased here. Greek life is a fantastic way to get involved on campus. The majority of Student government and student orientation staff is Greek. Its a great community to have around you when times are tough.

    Clubs and Activities

There are great clubs and activities everywhere on campus. There's the Student Activities Board, which runs basically all the fun events on campus, there's tons of Student Councils to get involved in, there's leadership opportunities everywhere, and even religious groups to join.

Great for these types of students

U of L is great for all types. We have guaranteed entrance programs for Medical, Dentistry, and Law, we have speed school for engineers to get their masters degree in 5 years, and we have a fantastic business school.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

All around campus, there are big cardinals on the ground. It was said that Duke came here, and stomped over every one before a game and lost that game. So, it is now tradition that no one steps on the cardinals, unless they want bad luck.

    Bang for the buck

You get a quality education, and Louisville offers way more scholarships than UK, giving students an affordable university.

    What to do for fun

There's always stuff going on in or around campus. U of L is really connected to Louisville and it's so easy to get involved in something you love.

    Food and Dining

There's a huge variety of eating locations, but the lines can be long at lunch. You really have to plan wisely.

    Dorm Life

I live in Threlkeld, which is basically the Honors dorm. Though my dorm isn't in the greatest of shape, I love the location.

    Academic Rigor

It really depends on the class. My BIO 240 class is extremely hard, but I like the challenge. However, all the professors are eager to help.

    Tips for prospective students

Definitely give Louisville a chance. We have way more scholarship opportunities than UK, and everyone is way more friendly here.

    In three sentences

Though University of Louisville is overlooked by UK in Kentucky, it is an excellent University. I love how close everything is to campus and how involved everyone is. I'm very glad that I chose to attend U of L.

    Dorm Life

Dorm life really gets you involved on campus. Living in the dorms helps you make friends, get involved in activities, join study groups and so much more. I would highly suggest living in a dorm for at least a year on campus.

It was very difficult, but rewarding.

    Tips for prospective students

    1. Register for classes as soon as possible. They will run out quickly. 2. Get a purple parking pass for the stadium, rather than the green pass. Campus Safety

I give campus safety a 3/5 because there have been quiet a few robbery incidents on campus and at UofL properties/apartments. Usually when these things happen, they send out an email immediately letting you know what happened and the description of the suspect. They also email you when there has been updates on the case f/e if the suspect was arrested. During welcome week (the week before classes start and the week everyone moves into their dorms) you HAVE TO attended an event called Blue Light Special. It teaches you about the emergency posts on campus and also give you various numbers you may need like campus police, campus escort (in case you're somewhere on campus and don't want to risk walking back to your dorm late at night; they'll drive you there) and many other things.

    Greek Life

Greek like is big but not huge. I see a lot of people with their sorority/fraternity shirts. It's not something I got into yet, but its something you should definitely look into to. Just a bit of advice, don't join based on stereotypes and what you believe other people may want you to join. Find out who you are deep down inside and then research the different sororities/fraternities and see which one reflects you as an individual.

    Clubs and Activities

There are over 300 groups and clubs to join (RSO's)! There's no way you should feel left out because there are some for EVERYTHING. But hey, if you can't find anything you're looking for, you can start your own organization. All it takes is a little effort to find an RSO or to make your own.

Great for these types of students

UofL is great for anyone. There's so many different people. Different races, religions, LGBTQ. I personally love it. It's a place where you can be yourself. Don't be afraid, there's others like you. That's why its important to join RSO's! That's where you'll find the people who are just like you. Remember that you meet your real and lifelong friends and college!!! :)

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Stepping on the Cardinal Bird is a big no no. It's located on the ground around campus. Sometimes you don't pay attention and step on it but its okay! I personally don't think its that big of a deal. There's one located on the ground in front of the ramp leading to the SAC (Student Activities Center) and its almost impossible not to step on it. You'd have to completely walk around it and sometimes, you just don't feel like it. Haha.

    What to do for fun

There's often festivals on campus, parties at the Bellamy, some other stuff. I think the amount of fun you have is pretty much based on who you know.

    Food and Dining

The Student Activity Center has Papa John's Pizza, Subway, Chick-fil-a, Wendy's, chinese and others. There's also an on campus buffet called the Ville Grill that's also pretty good. For all of those you can use your meal plan card. Also around the area is Bearno's Pizza, Qdoba, ice cream shop, and some others but you have to use your own money for those I believe. Honestly, towards the beginning of the year, you love the fast food options. Towards the end of the year, you're pretty much tired of it and ready for home cooked meals!!! Many people I know prefer the fast food over the Ville Grille, but hey! To each its own.

    Dorm Life

The dorms are pretty neat. Threlkheld (Honors dorm) is probably the worst and oldest dorm on campus. The next worst are Miller, Unitas and Center although they are really cheap. The UofL properties (Louisville Hall, Kurz, Community Park and Bettie Johnson) are probably the best dorms on campus, although they're on the expensive side. Bettie Johnson is the most expensive but you get an option of having your own bedroom AND bathroom while sharing a kitchen and living room with your roommate. It's pretty much your little apartment.

    Tips for prospective students

Tips would be to calculate your expenses (Meal plan, tuition, books, dorm) and make sure you have enough. Also to apply for FASFA and as many scholarships as possible. Try not to get your books from the UofL book store; they're super expensive on there. Look on Chegg and you can rent your books for 70%-90% cheaper. You can also look on Amazon. All freshmen will have to complete STOMP modules. I would suggest doing them over the summer as soon as they're posted on blackboard (link on UofL website) because they're pretty time consuming. They are 20-30 minute videos w/ quizzes afterwards. I know this is a lot of information, but if you have any question, you can email me @ asbake06@louisville.edu

    In three sentences

UofL is a great school. They're big on diversity and is a really big sports school. There's always free food and something to do. The school even go as far as sending out monthly emails letting you know where the free food will be.

There are two ways to buy food on campus, aside from using your own cash or credit. There are meal swipes and flex dollars, both of which are put on your id card. You can only use meal swipes at the one dining hall we have, which at times can get repetitive. The flex dollars on the other hand can be used at numerous places all over campus. There are restaurants such as McAlister's and Damon's and some fast food places like Chick-fil-A, Wendy's and Subway.

    Dorm Life

The newer dorms are great with tons of space and although some dorms are much older, the experience is what really makes dorm life great. It provides you with a good opportunity to meet new people.

    Academic Rigor

Of course the course loads are going to differ from one major to the next and some may be more rigorous than others, but overall I think most do offer courses that will challenge you and push you to succeed.

    Tips for prospective students

There are so many different things that you can get involved in here and I urge you to just jump right in. There is pretty much something for everyone and if you can't find something that suits your interest there is always the option of creating your own group or club within the school. You certainly will not regret getting involved in something, because it can help not only in making new friends but can also help you with your studies and finding opportunites after college.

    In three sentences

I'm from out of state so at first I was a little skeptical about going to school so far from home without knowing anyone, however, I ended up feeling right at home there. Even though the school is huge and has tons of students it actually feels like a small school in the sense that it seems like everyone knows each other. The people and staff are so welcoming and friendly, it's unlike any other school I've visited.

    Campus Safety

I feel pretty safe. Issues are reported via email as with any college. As long as you use common sense and apply the rules that you should apply anywhere else, you should be ok. Seriously, why would a female be out walking at 4am alone after leaving a club? Stupid is as stupid does.

    Clubs and Activities

Lots of daily activities; I just don't have the time to participate.

Great for these types of students

young and old; all walks of life; every ethnic background.

    Bang for the buck

I think you get a quality education here and I have learned a great deal since I've been here. Even things that I took no initial interest in became interesting and even exciting to me.

    What to do for fun

lots of activities always, but I don't participate because I work full-time and I am married with children. I don't have the time but I wish I did.

    Food and Dining

wide variety and some even healthy. not bad at all

    Academic Rigor

Very challenging but not overly. I made the Dean's List even with being a full-time working, married mother.

    Tips for prospective students

Parking may be far but the bus runs every 15 min. Be careful when signing up for science labs because they're usually run by a foreign graduate teaching assistant who barely speaks or understands English. This would be my only complaint. I don't pay to fail a class so if UL is using this strategy to save money,

    In three sentences

I enjoy attending the University of Louisville because they have a variety of classes suited to both traditional and the non-traditional student. Online, morning and evening class options are sufficient. Central location with ample parking is also a plus.

    Food and Dining

They have added many good restaurants here at UofL, but my only complaint is this: There need to be more healthy options. Places like Papa Johns, Wendy's and Chic Fil A are DELICIOUS, but they are very unhealthy if eaten regularly. And with a mandatory meal plan, you eat at these places pretty regularly. I'd like to see some healthy places thrown in the mix.

    Dorm Life

I do not live in a dorm myself, but most of the dorms here that I have been in are pretty decent. On every campus there are some questionable dorms, but you'll hear all about those once you submerge yourself in college.

    Academic Rigor

There are very rigorous classes here, and even the 'easy' ones are what you make them. Do your research with websites such as MyEdu in order to prepare yourself for the difficulties of the classes you choose. The message boards at MyEdu will help you greatly.

    Tips for prospective students

As mentioned before, be vigilant and do not give up if your communication with offices within this school do not go the way you'd like them to. Sometimes it is difficult to get a response, and sometimes you get the run around. This is not by any means limited to UofL, this happens at most universities. Be sure to never give up, especially if you are in dire need. Make some phone calls, and if you need to contact the hire-ups, then so be it. Make it happen for yourself.

    In three sentences

I enjoy this beautiful campus. Be vigilant with your correspondence to the offices within this university. Keep your head up.

    Campus Safety

Campus safety is something that seems to be taken very seriously. Campus police are everywhere, and if you are uncomfortable walking home somewhere late they have people that will come and pick you up. The University of Louisville also alerts all students when something is going on, whether it be a crime or severe weather, the university is very good about notifying us promptly.

    Greek Life

Greek life is interesting and seems to be pretty good. A large percentage of students get involved and there are plenty of different options to choose from.

Great for these types of students

    All types

    Bang for the buck

The university is nice but for the amount that you're paying to go here there's a lot more they could offer you and do for you. Even with the economy the way it is, it isn't necessary to nickel and dime students for every little thing.

    What to do for fun

There's a lot to do around campus and the city of Louisville. Sports, whether it be competing for the university of intramural, are always a good option. The new student activity center will be opening in the Fall of 2013. There are lots of quality restaurants around the city and just about anything you can imagine to do. Downtown has Fourth Street Live, which is always a neat place to go, especially on the weekends if you're old enough, and there are plenty of attractions for those interested in the arts, visual and performing. There's something for everybody around campus and the city.

    Food and Dining

There are plenty of places to eat, as well as free food on many occasions. The Ville Grille on third street is always available if you aren't sure what you want, along with plenty of other eating options throughout campus and in the Student Activity Center.

    Dorm Life

Most of the dorms on campus, as well as the housing surrounding campus are pretty nice. For dorms, get your forms and registration in quickly to get one of the better ones, otherwise there are plenty of living options surrounding campus that are very nice and affordable.

    Academic Rigor

The academics here are tough, but as long as you commit yourself fully to school and your studies you'll be okay. Certain classes and majors are of course harder than others, but find something you love and it will make your classes so much easier.

    Tips for prospective students

You don't necessarily have to decide what you want to do straight out of high school, but when you decide there should only be one determining factor behind your choice and that is, do you love what you're doing? Finding something that you'll enjoy not only studying, but doing for the rest of your life is a huge key to happiness and success as a whole.

    In three sentences

The University of Louisville is a great school for just about anybody. The diversity that lies within courses and majors offered, as well as the people allows everyone to be comfortable. Campus Safety

Campus is very safe! There are blue Help towers all over campus, help buttons in most of the bathrooms and locker rooms and also an Escort service. You can call escort if you stayed in the library too long and are skeptical about walking across campus in the dark.

    Greek Life

We have the Divine 9 African-American Greeks and also other types of Greeks. If you plan to pledge/rush, make sure your GPA is good and you do lots of community service.

The upperclassmen try to keep it fun for freshman. They have movie night outside or in the theater, a planetarium for those who like astronomy, lots of on campus activities depending on your preference, clubs and sports, Greek life and much more

    Food and Dining

Lots of diverse fast food around campus and we also have the Ville Grill which is a cafeteria buffet.

DPS is everywhere! I have never felt unsafe walking on campus at any time. Even with the location of U of L, it is a very safe campus.

    Clubs and Activities

Intramurals are so much fun! Find that one club that fits you and have fun with it.

Great for these types of students

Students that want a big university but to feel at home. Students that want to be pushed to do big things.

Never walk on the cardinal! Always be ready to do the CARD's cheer.

    What to do for fun

We have study parties, atleast every other night. There is always something going on, on campus. Go to them they are fun!

It all depends on where you go. One thing is for sure you get plenty of food with your meal plan.

    Dorm Life

I met some of my best friends on my floor of my dorm! No I didn't live in the freshman dorms but I didn't miss out on much. I loved my first year in my dorm. We had so much fun!

    Academic Rigor

I have had some pretty tough classes but I love the challenge. The professors are always ready to help in anyway they can. In high school teachers say college professor won't care If you pass or fail but they really do.

    Tips for prospective students

    Campus Safety

The campus police work hard to keep us safe. They even have a text message and e-mail alert system if something is going on near campus that could be a safety risk. The University also has programs in place for weather disasters and active shooter incidents.

    Clubs and Activities

There are clubs for just about any type of person on campus. Also, the intramural sports get a lot of attention as well. I encourage people to go out for them!

    Bang for the buck

For in-state students, it's a decently good tuition rate. We're trying to work with the University on preventing the yearly rise in tuition right now. For out of state students, I hear the rate is pretty good as well.

    What to do for fun

Since UofL is in an urban area, there is a lot to do around town nearby. Museums, baseball games (Louisville has a minor league team), basketball and football teams at UofL are both pretty good and are enjoyable games (packed all the time), as well as movie theaters, Churchill Downs (Kentucky Derby), the waterfront, etc.

    Food and Dining

UofL does a great job of trying to get us great food on campus. With a lot of options and more in the works, we have a lot to choose from and look forward to. They even let us buy the food tax-free if we use a meal plan.

    Dorm Life

From my friends that live on dorms, they like it. However, aside from the original freshman orientation and a handful of other times, I haven't spent much time in dorms on campus. I rated a three out of lack of knowledge.

    Academic Rigor

I can't speak entirely for the rest of the college, but I know that the engineering school (Speed School of Engineering) and the business school are top notch schools where the teachers and students work hard.

    Tips for prospective students

Many people who live on campus enjoy it, but many of us live off-campus. If you choose to live off campus, make sure you invest in a parking pass, or get familiar with the areas of campus that don't require a parking pass (right off campus, normally). Be prepared for different types of weather at any time, it's Kentucky!

    In three sentences

I like the area that UofL is set in, called Old Louisville. I love the feel of the school ad the type of students we have here at the University of Louisville. I feel like the University cares about it's students.

    Campus Safety

i am very pleased with the campus safety, it seems like you can't go outside without seeing a campus safety car driving around. i also like that there is an escort service, being a female on campus it's nice to use that resource when walking back to my dorm from a long night of studying at the library.

    Greek Life

greek life is like it's own community, i enjoy being greek very much. the is always some type of show or activity to raise money going on on campus. there was the step show last semester, and this semester is fryberger! everyone is allowed to come out, watch & vote!

    Clubs and Activities

it seriously seems like there is a club for everything. that makes it easy to find something you like and quickly get involved! you like to sing there is black diamond, you like to dance there are the lady birds, everything for everyone!

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

one unusual thing on campus is there are cardinal heads everywhere on the sidewalks, as a freshman during orientation they tell you it is bad luck to step on the heads.

    Bang for the buck

i pay out of state tuition to attend university of louisville and i believe it is well worth the money, i wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

    What to do for fun

there are many clubs and activities to do for fun. you can get involved in greek life or join one of the organizations like elt (empowering ladies together) or join the church on campus!

    Dorm Life

i enjoy dorm life i live in the tower and i have bonded with so many people in my building. the ras are always planning activities to get people from the different floors involved.

    Campus Safety

the campus itself is very safe. however, it is close to areas of the city that are regarded as less than safe. if you stay on campus you will be in good hands. the university employees a department of public safety that patrols campus and escort students when it is too dangerous for them to walk.

    Greek Life

the school is very greek. there is a greek row right across the street from the majority of campus. most non-native students who join greek life enjoy it thoroughly and stay active members. louisville is anti-hazing as well. the university offers many different chapters for students interested.

    Clubs and Activities

the university offers tons of clubs for extra curricular activities. they offer the student government association, psychology club, fencing club, guitar club, and many other clubs for all types of interests. i subtract a star because many clubs go without advertisement.

Great for these types of students

    - academic achievers pursuing a bachelor's degree - social work majors -business majors -students interested in greek like -students interested in in-state ky school

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

there is the tradition of not stepping on the cardinal bird anywhere it is painted on campus. there is also the inter-faith center. a place for students to go and openly discuss their religious insights.

    Bang for the buck

for the money, you will end of with a respectable degree that is acknowledged highly by employers. however, the school is slightly expensive because it is a public university. these fees can be avoided by the scholarly as the university offers many scholarship opportunities.

    What to do for fun

louisville offers many things to do for fun. the school itself offers a plethora of student based activities and clubs. not to mention that the city has many streets focused on entertainment. the city also houses a large skate park, parks with tennis courts, and many city based events.

    Food and Dining

there are many fast food locations scattered throughout campus. these locations accept a meal card for the freshman students. the only complaint is that there are few healthy choices and there is no grocery store where students can spend their meal points.

    Dorm Life

the dorms offer anything from a small cramped typical college experience to decked out sweets. the money you put in to your dorm expense is what you can expect to get out of it. the suites are very affordable and similar to that of an apartment.

    Academic Rigor

all the knowledge you could want from general majors is here at the university of louisville. they don't always offer the most specific majors, but they do have many programs. they strive to make the programs they offer some of the best, like the social work program, but some more specific majors go under the radar.

    Tips for prospective students

if i could advise anything to prospective students it would be to know your preferences. the university of louisville is a big school and you won't get the same type of attention you would expect from a smaller university. so as advice, to take complete advantage of your resources, talk to your professors individually and develop a working relationship for the greatest learning experience.

    In three sentences

the university of louisville is an outstanding education facility. the teachers are some of the best in the state and offer personal one-on-one assistance to their students. the university strives to excel in technological advancement as well as academic advancement.

    Dorm Life

Dorms are offered in wide varieties, from traditional to apartment style. I plan to stay in a suite style dorm, where you share a bathroom with three other people. The buildings are very well kept, and student life seems very active. There never seems to be a dull moment.

College is EXPENSIVE. Compared to private schools, UofL is a whole lot cheaper, but sometimes it seems like the university is spending most of our tuition money on new flashy buildings.

I love the University of Louisville and recommend it to anyone and everyone interested in learning and moving up in life. Not only is the education received worth the money but the whole college experience is amazing as well. There are many organizations and extracurricular activities to participate in which are great in forming bonds and connections with people who can only help you go further in your life and career choices. I am personally part of two organizations in which I hold executive positions. The school spirit in the air is also a great plus. You can really tell that the people that attend this college are here because they love it! Also, the staff and advisers are very helpful and ready to lend a hand with pretty much anything you need. UofL is has a very urban setting for all those who enjoy big cities. The UofL Speed School is a great program for any looking to pursue careers in engineering. If big sports programs, particularly football and basketball, are your cup of tea, then you can't go wrong with UofL.

    Tips for prospective students

As far as the research opportunities are concerned, I've heard that you want to seek it out yourself. Don't wait for it to come to you! That applies to all other organizations, programs, clubs, etc. Find a few things that you truly enjoy and get involved.

    Bang for the buck

Being a public college, UofL's tuition is relatively affordable. In-state tuition is even better, and they offer a Metroversity program that basically allows people in the Louisville Metro are (yes, including people who live nearby in Indiana) to attend with the lower in-state tuition. Also, while Louisville is a big city, the cost of living is fairly low compared to some other large cities.

    Will enjoy being here

I can't say for sure how enjoyable college life is at UofL until I have personally participated in it. However, I have visited the campus, and I know the city. I know many current Cardinals and I am have heard all about the how much they enjoy UofL. Nevertheless, it must be noted that I've heard many complain about how UofL is largely a commuter college: I've gotten the impression that the atmosphere of community may not be quite as strong as at colleges where the town is built around the university (such as at IU Bloomington).

    Will learn a lot

Let's face it...not every college can be as presitigious as Harvard. UofL, however, is nevertheless a great college that offers a wonderful opportunity for a college education. Not to mention, UofL is also a remarkable research institution. These opportunities for student research are wonderful, but I have noticed that they just aren't always widely advertised.

Any student can find their thing on campus. It's really welcoming and there is almost too much to do.

    Tips for prospective students

If you don't know for a fact that you want to be an engineer, don't immediately enroll in JB Speed. Wait a semester or two. It'll save your GPA and your scholarships...

It honestly costs a lot more than the projection states, it seems. I'm always paying more and more money. It's a great school though.

    Am enjoying being here

Being an out of state student and traveling over 3000 miles to attend school, I would have to say that the University of Louisville was a great choice for me. It has an amazing atmosphere and sense of belonging around campus. Being a sophomore and a gay student, I was able to see that there is a lot more here to offer than just you're typical college, especially for the LGBT students. The LGBT services here are amazing and are definitely involved in a lot. If it wasn't for the LGBT office, I fear that I would not have been able to be who I am. Because of them I am glad that I am here. I have made new friends, and have begun to have a true college experience outside the classroom. The University of Louisville is the place to be and if you love helping people I suggest that this is where you need to be, this is one of the most accepting campuses I have known and is really pushing for the equality of all students. The motto used to be Diversity. It's Happening Here. But I believe that the motto should be, Equality, Happening Here and Now! I love being here and glad that I got to get out of my comfort zone and got to meet new and exciting people. After all, branching out is what college is all about!

    Am learning a lot

It is a great place to learn a great deal. I have had the chance of meeting and being taught by amazing professors. They care for you and truly want you to do your best!

Louisville is great for any kind of student. If you're going to college just for the experience, Louisville will definitely get the job done. On the other hand, Louisville has great academics, too. There are many great tutoring programs and a wonderful honors program, so Louisville can be a perfect fit for anyone.

    Tips for prospective students

Visit the campus. Once you visit, if it's right for you, you'll just know. As long as you don't come on a miserable rainy day, you'll fall in love with the campus and you'll be here at the start of the next semester.

    Bang for the buck

Definitely a great school for what it costs. It was my favorite school that I visited and it was the cheapest of all that I was considering. They also give out a considerable amount of financial aid, so Louisville gives you a great bang for your buck.

    Am enjoying being here

Not only do you learn a lot at Louisville, but the campus is great too. The Student Activites Center is awesome and you get a big school feeling while the campus is quite compact and it's easy to get from one place to another.

    Am learning a lot

I'm in the Speed School of Engineering, so yes, I'm learning a lot. The Speed School is well known all over Kentucky and elsewhere for being a great engineering school. The guidelines they set for you to get a master's in five years was a deciding point for me choosing Louisville.

    Tips for prospective students

Check out all of your options before deciding on a school. Don't choose a school because of all your friends will be going with you. It's okay to be different. Choose a school that makes you feel most comfortable and at ease. There is nothing worse than being stuck in a place that you do not like or are not able to be yourself at. Make the decision for yourself.

    Bang for the buck

With all of the knowledge that I am receiving I would say that the University of Louisville is a great school. Room and board seems about average for university on-campus living. The classrooms are kept clean and pretty up to date with technology. The campus is kept neat and tidy.

    Am enjoying being here

I am not originally from Kentucky and was quite hesitant about moving down here, but I do not regret it for a minute. Everyone that I have met has been amiable and accepting. On and around campus there are so many opportunities to meet new people and make friends. This is almost always something to do, depending on your interests.

    Am learning a lot

Going to class is something that almost every student dreads, but in college students can choose which classes they want to attend. The University of Louisville has a wide variety of class to choose from. I was a little anxious to take Archaeology but once I began attending the class I soon realized how interesting it is, and how much it actually overlaps with some other classes. It was quite fun to be able to know something for one class and for it to carry over to the next. I truly enjoy all of the classes here at the University of Louisville.

    Tips for prospective students

Be as well prepared as possible. Try not to miss any classes because professors move through lessons fairly quick. Your first semester is going to be your most difficult, so buckle down.

    Bang for the buck

Like I said earlier, your tuition covers everything you would find useful such as the tutoring program. It's just up to you to take advantage of them.

    Am enjoying being here

The people you meet are always very friendly. I've made a lot of good friends within the first week of school. You just have to get out there and introduce yourself.

I enjoy the classes as well as the professors. You will get some professors that aren't very helpful, and if that's the case they have an excellent tutoring center there called REACH. It's paid for by your tuition so take advantage of it. They also have another helpful center called the Writing Center where you can go and receive help on your papers and stuff of that nature. Overall, I am very satisfied.

Great for these types of students

-Students who prefer life in an urban area -Students seeking networking connections -Students seeking a strong general education in addition to a specific degree -Kentucky residents seeking higher education -Students uncertain of their desired degree, who may need to make several drastic degree changes, but don't want to have to change schools with each degree change.

    Tips for prospective students

Decide what is most important to you, and choose your university based on the few things that are most important for you higher education. If you know what specific degree you would like to pursue, then ensure that the program for that degree is a strong program in the University that you choose. Also, decide what you would like to be around your University. Louisville is very good for those seeking to make many networking connections, and for those who enjoy life within a large city. If you prefer smaller cities, fewer crowds, and a secluded University surrounded by hiking trails and forests, then find a College or University that has the few qualities that you find most important.

    Bang for the buck

The University is a very well-priced option for higher education, especially for in-state students. There are several university scholarships, such as the scholarships for having attending Governor School for the Arts or Governor Scholar Program, as well as many of the Trustee's Scholarships through the University, that offer opportunities for In-State and Out-of-State students afford school. The educational and networking opportunities available to the students are limited only by a student's initiative and diligence, and tuition, room and board are reasonably priced.

The University of Louisville has a very active campus life, with hundreds of student organizations and the ability for students to create new organizations, a strong Greek presence, and a large student body. Also, since the University is in the middle of Louisville, KY, student ID cards also function as a free bus pass, so if you want to leave campus, you have free transportation to nearly anywhere that you would want to go. Music students get free tickets to most Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Opera, and Louisville Ballet events, and there are concerts and recitals in the music building throughout the year that are free to the public. Various organizations within the University host special events throughout the year, and the Student Activities Center has many things to entertain the students, such as free pool and table tennis, a gym, and plenty of places to just sit and relax.

    Am learning a lot

The University of Louisville is a large university, so much of the learning depends upon the student. General education classes are large, so it is possible to blend in with the crowd and only passively attend class, but all professors have office hours for which you do not need an appointment, so one-on-one time is never lacking. The library is immense, so learning materials are never lacking, and if the library happens to not own a research source that you need, then you can use the Inter-Library Loan system, which will find a library that does own the book and ship it to the University of Louisville library for you to borrow. Tutors for all general education classes and most 300 level classes are free and easy to access through the REACH tutoring program. The University is very conducive to the learning environment, and offers every opportunity for students to learn as much as they are willing and able to learn.

Great for these types of students

The University of Louisville is great for students who… • Need to be prepared for the work force • Want to make lasting friends • May have not had the best academic career in high school • Desire to make contacts in the social and labor ladders • Try to get involved in their community • Reform themselves to become a better citizen • Love Football and Basketball!!! • Live in or around Kentucky • Strive to grow spiritually • Want to participate in fun activities most every week • Want a great college experience

    Tips for prospective students

If you're not sure about U of L, come visit! Once you do, you will fall in love with the people and campus. There is nothing to fear about college-it is fun and exciting. The worst thing is the “fear of the unknown.” Take out that factor by researching your schools, particularly U of L. You will find that the more you know about a school, the more comfortable you will be, and the better decision you will make for you. The best decision for me was to go to Purdue and visit their engineering school near the same time I visited U of L’s Speed School of Engineering. Those visits sealed the deal for me-I realized that, in this case, the education was very similar. The guaranteed co-ops, “homier” campus, and cost of tuition made the choice pretty easy. Also, don’t limit yourself by not applying to every single college you think you might want to attend! The worst feeling you can have is wondering whether you could have made it into a school and the regret you feel afterward.

    Bang for the buck

While the University of Louisville provides the skills necessary to succeed to anyone, it is up to the student to get the Bang for the Buck. I am in the Engineering College at U of L. Unfortunately, it is not a big name engineering school, so many companies I may want to work for look at large schools before U of L. However, I have already had the opportunity to make contacts to those companies through the leadership at U of L. In particular, U of L has a co-operative education program for engineers in which I get to work for engineering companies such as GE and Raytheon Missile Systems, get paid, and earn experience! Its preparing me for a great career in the field, and it will prepare you, too. (Also, for any of you Music or Business School students, those U of L programs are amazing a very well know across the country----that means more cash at jobs after graduation!!)

    Am enjoying being here

There are literally hundreds of Recognized Student Organizations to join, and if you can't find one, you can start one-for FREE! The only problem you will have is making sure you don’t join too many activities. Free or cheap lunches and dinners are held throughout the year by various organizations. I personally compete in volleyball games every Tuesday, and there are Ultimate Frisbee and Racquetball leagues galore. And if that’s not your scene, then you can join any number of societies or Greek organizations to find activities to do for the weekend or throughout the week. If you take advantage of everything, there couldn’t be a better college experience.

    Am learning a lot

Not only is there a wealth of wisdom in every professor, every opportunity is given so that a student can thrive. People say that a big school isn’t as good because each student won’t get personal attention. This is totally false-even in my largest classes, Calculus and Physics, I can feel free to raise my hand to ask questions at (almost) any time and the professors are available for much of the day for a one-on-one. The library is amazing! I had never used a library before college, but now, I am in there for a part of every day. There is easy searching, a LOT of computers, plenty of quiet places to study, and there are always a few librarians around to help. In addition to one-on-ones with teachers and their assistants, students can find FREE tutors in the REACH center. This is huge! If you ever need help, there are tutors for almost every 300 level class and under. Lastly, you will not be made fun of for doing well and learning a ton. The U of L student body is full of people who will support your academic successes.
