Washington and Lee University is a liberal arts university located along the Shenandoah River surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Allegheny Mountains. Washington and Lee is believed to have admitted the first African American student, John Chavis in 1795, however, he was not given a degree. The private college was founded by Scots-Irish Presbyterians but has been nonsectarian from the beginning. The Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics at Washington and Lee is the first college of commerce at a liberal arts institution to receive a national accreditation.
