Stony Brook offers a great, quality education for a state school price, however, getting a quality education depends primarily on the student. Many of the science and math based classes are quite large and are often held in huge lecture halls. Due to the large class sizes, many people don’t go to class, and often, especially in 100 level classes, attendance is not mandatory. However, some professors do take attendance and often attendance, depending on one’s professor can be critical to the class. Majority of the professors at Stony Brook are also quite brilliant and because Stony...

This school is in a very good area, most people come back to the city because its not far, and during the weekends, it gets boring here. Great fields in the sciences much better and convenient for kids looking to dorm not to far away

It is a great school with a very high bar set for its students. The other students are extremely competitive and make sure that everyone else knows it. The course work is challenging but rewarding despite the fact that some of the professors are very difficult to understand.

Science class here will grill you but it shapes your mind! It is a beautiful campus with one of the most diverse students groups. It is as amazing as I imagined it to be!

If you're looking for diversity (and a lot of international students, especially from Asia) this is the place for you. Stony Brook is beautiful in the summer/spring/fall, and hideous in the winter. Also, the yik yak game is very strong 24/7.

The students here are really smart. The teachers don't always teach well, but Stony Brook has really great resources. If you are interested in research or medical school, you should apply.

If you want to attend a big, impersonal, academically strenuous school, then this is the school for you. There is no real sense of camaraderie or pride shared between students. The campus is very large and diverse, but people don't like to stray from their set groups.

If you plan on pursuing a career in a STEM field - especially one in, say, engineering or medicine, then Stony Brook University is for you. The rigor of the classes is challenging but in that prepares you for what is to come in competitive careers; likewise, with the price of a public university, you are truly getting the bang for your buck, since Stony is one of the top 25 schools for STEM careers. However, if you plan on going into the humanities, I'd tell you to go elsewhere because they are very clearly not the focus here.

The campus, really nice... The professors, friendly if you know how to network and talk to them... The people here, really friendly and getting to meet/know new people isn't a task at all. The school is very nice, they provide fun activities almost daily for students, and with the plethora of clubs available at this school, one can have a true college experience at Stony Brook University.
