Human Development and Family Studies, General

Majoring in human development and family studies offers you the opportunity to help people, make a difference in society, and embark on a rewarding career. Human development and family studies majors study multiple disciplines. These include psychology, economics, child development, communication, health, sociology, and a whole lot more. After mastering the basics, you'll take courses in specialized topics like development through adulthood, marriage and family relationships, and family psychology. This classwork will allow you to learn more about how families live together and solve problems. Some schools will allow you to select a specialization like early childhood or family studies. Often, you'll be able to complete an internship that lets you use your knowledge in real-life situations. Many graduates go on to work in youth summer camps, human service agencies, residential treatment programs, group homes, youth mentoring programs, adult activity and living centers, family resource centers, or childcare facilities. Some students also return to college to pursue graduate degrees in marriage and family therapy, social work, or counseling.
